About Our Program

Truman College pioneered the first associate degree nursing program in 1964, serving as a model for other community colleges in Illinois. Since its beginning more than 3000 students have graduated from Truman's Nursing program.

Truman, one of the City Colleges of Chicago, offers a two-year full-time program that prepares students for a career as a registered nurse (RN). The educational program gives students a basic knowledge of general education, social and biological sciences, nursing theory, and actual care of patients.

Students receive a variety of learning experiences in clinical settings under the guidance of masters degree nursing faculty members. The program also helps to prepare students to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for Registered Nursing.

Registered Nurses work in hospitals, nursing homes, and other health care facilities. The United States is currently in the midst of a nursing shortage and the demand for professional registered nurses continues to increase. As a Truman Nursing graduate, you will recieve an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Nursing and be eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX). According to the IllinoisNurses Association, the average starting salary for hospital staff nurses is $35,000 or better.

Eligibility for the Nursing Program:

In order to be considered for admission to the District Associate Degree Nursing Program, a student must complete all of the admissions requirements.

These requirements must be met by February 1st in order to submit an application for the following school year. You will need the following documents to complete the admissions process to the Nursing Program. All documents are in Adobe PDF Format. You may also wish to download the documents as one zipped file.
