Advisor Tom Mikula wins 2009 Kathy Osterman Award

Tom has has worked at Truman for 32 years. He arrived in the fall of 1977 to work on a grant program designed to improve retention, for which he created Biology and Chemistry review sessions. Moving to the Tutoring Center, he continued the Biology review sessions and became the person to see for students having trouble in that area. As an advisor, he is responsible for recruiting new students and helping current students choose courses that will most directly help them reach their academic goals.

In addition to his work at Truman, Tom created study skills workshops for Chicago high school students and students at the City Colleges of Chicago and gave tutoring workshops for counselors employed by Youth Outreach Services.

He is known not only for his professionalism and expertise, but for being unfailingly supportive, attentive, and compassionate. He is so well regarded that twice, first when grant funds were cut and then when a reduction in force occurred, faculty and students embarked on a letter-writing campaign to the City Colleges of Chicago to have him retained.

Each year, the Osterman Awards honor the most outstanding city employees and, hopefully, inspire others to pursue careers in public service. The 41-year-old program, originally called the Superior Public Service Awards, was renamed in 1993 in memory of the late Kathy Osterman, a highly respected public official who served as alderman and later as Executive Director of the Mayor's Office of Special Events. Her son, Harry Osterman, represents the 14th District in the Illinois House of Representatives.

Green Art Award Ceremony is November 19 at 10 am

The ceremony, part of a week-long celebration hosted by Harry S Truman College, Uptown United, and the TruEco Student Club, will showcase art projects the students created on recycling.

The projects will be on display in the lobby through November 23. Other items on display will include a solar panel exhibit courtesy of GAIA, a nonprofit organization that promotes sustainable environmental practices and provides the opportunity to volunteer for community beautification projects.

Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry Workshop

Some knowledge of chemistry is helpful but not required. Participants will be able to install the GC-MS software on their own laptop computers, and will receive a user manual, data from experiments run at Truman College, and sample files to begin their own research. At least 6 diverse case studies will be performed by students, who will prepare samples and run them during the training session (some sample runs may extend into the afternoon). Participants may bring their own samples as well, but should contact Professor Abrams for guidance. The session will provide tips on finding and developing appropriate methods of analysis for samples of interest. Participants will create a strategy for using the instrument in their research. Students who complete the training can schedule time on the instrument with Professor Abrams.

Case studies may include: ingredients of perfumes, contaminants in water, analysis of gases, simulated screening for inborn errors of metabolism in infants, analysis of volatile plant extracts, testing food products for melamine, testing a toy for poison, analysis of insect pheromones, and solid phase micro-extraction (SPME), applicable to a wide range of interesting problems. Students will choose case studies based on their interest and chemistry background; there will be a project available for every level!

Strategic Planning Grant Applications due Oct 15

The total amount of funds available for this project is $10,000. Grant requests may be anywhere between $500 to $10,000, but the likelihood that one project will receive the full amount is very small.

The criteria and rules for the grant and an application form are available on the Strategic Planning web page. Please note that completed applications must be turned in to Elizabeth Silk by October 15, 2009, by noon. They will be reviewed by the Strategic Planning Committee who will select and interview all finalists, and then pick the final awardees. We hope to complete the selection process and inform all awardees by early November. In the future, this process will be completed by the end of the spring term.

Orphans closes this weekend

View photos of the performance. This is the second production of Truman's theatre company, the Truman Theatre Project.

Orphans, Lyle Kessler's 1985 play, centers on a pair of young men, brothers, eking out a living in a shabby apartment, the younger one trapped inside by his own fears, the older supporting them both by roaming the streets, mugging people at knife point. Into this scene steps an older man, a dapper gangster and con man, who becomes a troublesome father figure to both brothers and changes the course of their lives.

The Truman Theatre Project was formed to showcase Truman’s talent. Orphans is performed by Wes Daniel, a Truman alum, Austin Cornett, a Truman student, and Rick Reardon a Truman Middle College staff member and professional actor.

Evening shows are 7 p.m. Fridays, October 30 and November 6, and Saturdays, October 31 and November 7. Matinees run at 1 p.m. Sundays, November 1 and 8. All shows are in Novar Hall. Tickets are in the form of a donation; there is no set ticket price.

A successful first year for the Truman Scholars

Places and Spaces, Landscapes and Cityscapes
An Exhibition of Photographs by Cecile Margulies

This exhibit by Cecile Margulies focuses on landscapes, architecture, and other built environments frequently emphasizing abstract shapes, patterns, and designs.

Cecile has a long-time interest in architecture and travel. Many of the images shown here are the result of her summertime trips in this country and abroad. She bought her first camera, a 35mm, to take on a trip to Glacier Bay, Alaska. Deciding she needed instruction on how to use the camera properly, she enrolled in a photography class at DePaul University. Thereafter, she registered for the photography classes at Truman College, since she lives nearby.

Encouraged by her instructors at DePaul and Truman, she continues to develop her skill as a photographer. She recently purchased a Hasselblad, a medium-format camera used to take the square photos in this exhibit. She used both cameras on a trip to Crowsnest Pass (Alberta, Canada). The photographs displayed here were taken in Chicago, Venice, Prague, Crowsnest Pass, and national parks of Grand Canyon, Zion, and Bryce Canyon.

The photos were taken during daylight hours, and the developing and printing are traditional darkroom techniques.

During her time at Truman College, Cecile says she has been fortunate to have the instruction and encouragement of the faculty and staff: Jeane McGrail, Carole Harmel, Jan Wessels, and Jose Garcia.

As you know, on November 8th the House of Representatives passed a health care reform bill, which has now gone to the Senate. Join us on November 30th for a lively debate (or just listen and learn!) about this oncoming reform. The Brown Bag Discussion is Monday, November 30th from 3:30-4:30pm in Room 1947-55. It begins our series on health care reform (which will continue in the Spring 2010 semester). To kick off the debate, we will present a PowerPoint about obesity in the U.S. and the world.

Detecting trace chemicals in the world around us

Truman Soccer Team Top in League

Tony Gamboa, coach of the women's team, College Advisor Carlos Martin-Llamazares, members of the Student Success and Leadership Institute, students, friends, and players' families were all out to support the team.

Even strangers in the crowd were chanting Truman's name. This is the second year in a row the five-year-old team has made the finals. The 25 team members come from at least 10 different countries. All are required by club league rules to maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, but most do much better. Standards will go up next year when the team joins the National Junior College Athletic Association league.

Memorial for E. Donald Two-Rivers

Eddie, as he was known, was born Edmund Donald Broeffle on June 29, 1945 on the Seine River Reserve in Ontario, Canada. He was a full blood Ojibwe whose name in the Ojibwe language was Neeshnabae, meaning "two rivers," which he took as his pen name.

As a teenager, he was in and out of reform schools, finally earning a prison sentence as an adult in the mid-1960s for burglary. In prison, he met Paul Crump, a former death row inmate who won fame -- and parole -- after writing Burn, Killer, Burn, a novel about a murderer who commits suicide rather than be executed. Crump recognized talent in Eddie and encouraged him to write.

"Before I had writing, I kept everything pent up," he once said. "I was very criminal. By writing, I was able to get rid of those feelings of anger. The creative process and its exploring of different options gave me control of my own life. It’s been a good thing for me. I could purge myself of socially unacceptable rage by writing. Writing saved my life."

Out of prison, Eddie lived in Chicago, where he worked first in construction and then as a journeyman machinist. During the 1970s, he was an active member of the American Indian Movement (AIM) here and Columbus, OH. Years later, his writing often reflected his involvement not only in AIM, but in the environmental movement and the struggle to uphold the rights of American workers as well.

When the need for machinists dwindled in the early 1990s, he turned full time to writing and community work. He was a consultant to the American Indian Business Association and from 1993 to 1995 was a community organizer for the American Indian Economic Development Association. In the late 1980s, he wrote a weekly column for the Lerner (now Pioneer Press) Newspapers titled, Life in Albany Park.

His first chapbook of poetry, A Dozen Cold Ones, was published in 1992 by March/Abrazo Press. The University of Oklahoma Press published a collection of his short stories, Survivor’s Medicine, in 1998. The book won him the 1999 American Book Award from the Before Columbus Foundation.

"Decades of war in the Sudan, and the ongoing genocide in Darfur, led to the deaths of over two million people," said Malual Awak, President of the Sudanese Community Association of Illinois. "This catastrophe caused the flight of thousands of refugees to the United States. Illinois Sudanese have survived unimaginable adversity and are working to build new lives for their families.".

Some community members are "Lost Boys," who walked thousands of miles after their villages were destroyed and their family members killed during Sudan’s civil war. Arriving in the United States with no proof of a birth date, the Sudanese Lost Boys were all assigned January 1 as their official birthday. "We come together as one this January 4 to celebrate their remarkable journey," added Awak.

John Prendergast is Co-Chair of the ENOUGH Project, an initiative to end genocide and crimes against humanity. During the Clinton administration, John was involved in a number of peace processes in Africa while he was Director of African Affairs at the National Security Council and Special Advisor at the Department of State. John has also worked for members of Congress, the United Nations, human rights organizations, and think tanks, as well as having been a youth counselor and basketball coach in the U.S. He has authored eight books on Africa, including Not on Our Watch, a New York Times bestseller he co-authored with Don Cheadle. John is working on a new book which focuses on his 20 years in the Big Brother program. John has helped produce two documentaries on Northern Uganda and been involved in three documentaries on Sudan. He has been part of three episodes of CBS' 60 Minutes which earned an Emmy Award for Best Continuing News Coverage and is helping to develop two additional episodes. He is helping to spearhead a campaign involving the NBA and Participant Productions to widen awareness on Darfur, as well as a campaign to end the violence against women and girls in the Congo. John travels regularly to Africa's war zones on fact-finding missions, peace-making initiatives, and awareness-raising trips. He is a visiting professor at the University of San Diego and the American University in Cairo.

The mission of the Sudanese Community Association of Illinois is to develop and operate a Sudanese Community Center which meets the human services needs of Illinois residents of Sudanese descent, regardless of religious, tribal or ethnic background. The CCC Visa Debit College Card, managed by Chase, is much like a gift card. Only the giver (CCC) can put money on it, and it exists separately from your other bank accounts. Yet it operates like a debit card. You can use it anywhere Visa cards are accepted, as the saying goes, and you have access to your money at any one of more than 3,000 ATMs operated by Chase. Free customer service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. To check when your refund will be available on the card, visit My.CCC.Edu.

If you choose this option, it's important to be aware of the fees. You get only one free ATM withdrawal per deposit. After that, you'll be charged $2.00 per withdrawal from the bank itself, more if you use a non-Chase ATM. You also get one free withdrawal from the bank itself. After that, if you use a teller, it will cost you $10.00. If you go over your limit or want a balance inquiry, you'll pay $1.25. A copy of a bank statement costs $1.00. Replacing a lost or stolen card is $15.00. And if you don't use the card for 6 months, Chase will charge you $5.00 per month until the account is closed.

Truman College offers NEW Medical Assisting Program

Truman Theatre Project's first play ends this weekend

Truman College will have a new theater company in part because the Rev. Jesse Jackson ran into silent film comedian Ben Turpin outside the Prop Theater one night.

Jackson, actually actor Varrick Douglas, was starring in the long-running production Hizzoner, about legendary Chicago mayor Richard J. Daley. Turpin, played by actor Rick Reardon, was in Sounds of Silence, a play about the early days of Chicago's Essanay Studios, one of the first silent film companies. Both plays were being staged at the Prop Theatre, and the two actors would chat while waiting to go onstage.

"I'd see Varrick all the time," Reardon said. "He told me that he had written some plays."

One of those plays, Who's Afraid of Affirmative Action?, will be the inaugural production of the Truman Theater Project, opening November 14 in Novar Hall on the third floor of the college.

Reardon and Douglas, both professional actors, are also part-time instructors at Truman College; Reardon, in the college's alternative high school, and Douglas, in the Interdisciplinary Studies Department. The play, a comedy based on Edward Albee's award-winning drama, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, centers on a young African American doctoral candidate and his wife spending a fractious evening at the home of a jaded, drunken older professor and his unhappy, somewhat vicious wife.

"Varrick just mirrors that story, brilliantly, I think," Reardon said. "He really does a fine job."

The cast includes Reardon as the older professor, Preston, and Jacqueline Stone, founding member and executive director of the TUTA Theatre in Chicago, as his wife, Joanne. Truman student Sylvester Miller plays the young professor, Akil, and Truman Cosmetology student Angela Cordero plays his wife, Amy.

Reardon, the Truman Theater Project's artistic director, created the company to showcase student actors, student playwrights, and even students who have written short stories and essays.

"What I really am encouraging is that our students create the plays," he said. "I want to do social problem plays and I want them to come from our students here at Truman College."

Still, he hopes eventually to draw playwrights and actors from the other City Colleges of Chicago, possibly even producing shows on other campuses, all in a workshop atmosphere.

"After all," he said. "It ain't Broadway."

Curtain goes up on Who's Afraid of Affirmative Action at 7:30 p.m. Friday, November 14 and at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 15 and Sunday, November 16. Who's Afraid of Affirmative Action continues at 7:30 p.m. November 21 and at 1 p.m. November 22 and 23. All shows are in Novar Hall. Tickets are a donation of $10 or whatever patrons can offer.

Truman Student part of winning team

The City Colleges of Chicago team competed against teams from seven other colleges from around the United States, six of them four-year institutions. The winning round was against Whittier College, a private four-year college in California.

In addition to a trophy, each team member received a Chancellor’s Fund for Excellence Scholarship, as well as a 24-credit-hour tuition waiver from their individual campuses. The student team and coaches were honored in a public ceremony at Kennedy-King College April 30.

Juan grew up north of Mexico City and, at 18, entered the University of Mexico, majoring in psychology and intending “to do something to help other people.” A year later, that intent carried him to a Benedictine monastery, which he enjoyed but found confining. He left and took a job as a data entry clerk to earn enough to re-enter the university, but the job didn’t pay well enough so he called a cousin in Chicago who managed a pizzeria. Two months later, he was here, working. Since English proficiency is a university requirement in Mexico, he enrolled in English as a Second Language at Truman.

He qualified for the Transitional Bilingual Learning Center (TBLC), designed for students who are academically ready for college but lack the English skills, and earned a GPA high enough for a Harold Washington Scholarship and membership in the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. He became active in the Latinos United for Education (LUFE) student club and served as president of the Student Government Association.

Today, Juan majors in psychology at Loyola University. He pays his way by working and with help from scholarships from Loyola, Phi Theta Kappa, the Chancellor’s Fund for Excellence Scholarship, and a scholarship from the quiz show’s producers, Central City Productions.

The film tracks an Oglala Sioux family's struggle to farm industrial hemp, whose cultivation, banned in the US, the Oglala Sioux Tribe had legalized. Tribal sovereignty, economic rights, and family traditions come under attack as the US government disrupts the hemp harvest year after year. Sharon Todd, Truman's director of grant assistance, will be on hand after the film to discuss tribal sovereignty law.

The suggested admission price is two cans or boxes of imperishable food, which the Social Divide will donate to the Howard Area Community Center. Soda and popcorn will be served.

A Student You Should Know!

Erin started college straight out of high school, but after a year, decided to take time off from school and found herself flying the friendly skies as a flight attendant. Working for both commercial and private airlines, Erin traveled to Asia and Europe, sometimes traveling for weeks at a time. Erin enjoyed her time as a flight attendant, and traveling allowed her to see many places, but after a while, she realized that she wanted to go back to school and finish her degree. When her contract with the airline was up, she took the opportunity to go back to school and start a new chapter in her life.

Erin started at Truman College in Fall 2007 and is working hard to finish here and transfer to DePaul. She is interested in getting her Bachelor's in political science and eventually may pursue a law degree. Erin's interests lie in working for the federal government and she hopes to one day work for the department of state or the department of justice, or maybe even the FBI.

Erin plans to be done with her Bachelor’s degree in the next two and half years. In the meantime, when she is not in classes at Truman, where she maintains a 4.0 grade average, she participates in the Model UN club, waitresses, and volunteers with her father’s police department in the suburbs. Erin also likes to spend time with her puppy and her family, who have always been very supportive of her endeavors.

A Student You Should Know!

Amanda grew up in the Chicago metropolitan area. After her 6th grade of formal schooling, she joined the ranks of "home-schooled" children, where her mother was active in the growing movement. Amanda also was active, accompanying her mom on many trips to Springfield to lobby for the cause. Star even became a spokesperson in her own right, speaking on behalf of other home-schooled students.

After graduating from high school, Amanda turned to entrepreneurship. She opened her own artists' boutique in the Wrigleyville neighborhood, selling art, jewelry, and her own line of clothing. When that segment of her life closed, she continued on with her fashion design business, all the while working in nightclubs - bartending, producing fashion shows, and hosting parties. Unfortunately, living the glamorous life lead her through a series of bad choices. This put her on "a fast road to nowhere", forcing Amanda to question her life's direction.

One of her mantras has always been, "When life deals you a bad hand, and you either have to play it or fold." And folding was not an option for Amanda! After the birth of her son Silver, Amanda began to look at her life differently. Wanting to increase her skills and expand her life experience, she decided to give college a shot and ended up at Truman in Fall 2006. As with everything else she has done, she jumped feet first into her studies and with the help of TRiO's Student Support Services, Amanda, a 4.0 student, was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for community colleges.

In addition to devoting her time to her son and to Truman College, she works as a volunteer at Nettelhorst Elementary School. There she helps in the classroom as well as heads up the "Save For America" program with Harris Bank. Working within her son's school, she has realized that she has a passion for teaching young children. She is now studying to become an elementary school educator. After completing her Associate's Degree, she plans to transfer to either the University of Chicago or DePaul University to get her Bachelors Degree. Amanda, a Student You Should Know, is definitely on the road to a life enriched by her past experiences, her son, her studies, and her goals.

The instructor is Omer M. Mozaffar, who has two master's degrees in Islamic Studies from the University of Chicago and is a doctoral candidate there in Islamic studies as well. Truman partners with SIUC to offer bachelor's in Automotive Technology

This is good news because if you live in Chicago, SIUC is at the other end of Illinois. In fact, you can't get much further south without hitting Missouri.

Chicago students will be able to earn a bachelor's degree in automotive technology through a "2+2 program" in which they complete an associate of applied science degree in automotive technology from Truman or Kennedy-King College then transfer to the SIUC program. SIUC faculty will teach upper-level automotive technical and automotive management courses at Truman.

SIUC advisor Christina Matuschka works at Truman to recruit students, keep them on track with their coursework, and help them apply for financial aid, scholarships, and summer internships. Truman and SIUC have internship agreements with automakers like Toyota, Volkswagen, and GM, as well as with after-market auto companies like parts manufacturer Bosch.

"The partnership between Truman and SIUC is helping our students continue their education and further their career opportunities,” said Harold Santamaria, who oversees Truman’s Automotive Technology Program. “We have not only received great support from the industry, but we’re also seen as pioneers in the area of educational partnerships."

The SIUC baccalaureate program mixes upper-level automotive technology classes with business courses. Graduates have the option of working not only as technicians, but as sales and service managers or tool company reps as well. They can even go on to teach or earn a master’s in business administration, Ms. Matuschka said.

A degree in automotive technology means a higher salary. Technicians just starting in the field can make $35,000 to $42,000 annually. Experienced technicians, depending on how fast they work, can make up to $100,000 a year.

"I really think this is a great opportunity for students to pursue an education in a field they enjoy," Ms. Matuschka said.

The SIUC automotive technology program ranks as one of the nation's top automotive post-secondary education programs. It was the national winner of the Automotive Industry Planning Council's Award of Excellence in 2005, making that the third time the program received the award. It also won in 1991 and 1999. Truman’s automotive technology program holds the highest rating offered by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) and the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).

Truman Student earns coveted spot on Salamanca trip

Aubrey was one of 20 City Colleges students who spent a month in Salamanca, studying at the city’s 800-year-old university. She and the other students took intensive courses in Spanish language, culture, and history, living with local families and touring historic sites on the weekends.

Spanish instructors from all City Colleges campuses worked together with District Office representatives to develop curriculum, course requirements, and student profiles and set the selection process.

"It has been a very interesting collaborative effort between the District and Colleges," said Truman College Spanish instructor Dianne Torres.

Each college selects three students, chosen on the basis of academic standing and interviews, including one with Chancellor Watson. Students take a prep course in Spanish language and culture, which this year was held at Malcolm X College. Two teachers accompany the students to Salamanca. The project ends with individual student presentations to faculty, administrators, and fellow participants. Dr. Jose Aybar, Associate Vice Chancellor for Arts and Sciences, oversees the project for the District.

Aubrey came home from Salamanca with greater confidence in her Spanish skills. Though classes were small and instructors were careful not to move too fast, they and the students’ host families rarely used a word of English.

"It was really intense," she said, "a lot of work."

Touring the Spanish countryside, Aubrey developed an appreciation for more than the language. She saw El Escorial, the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo El Real, which houses the palace of Prince Phillip II and the sepulchers of Spanish monarchs, consorts, and princes. In Gijon, she gazed at the ocean; in Avila, she walked across a wall built by the Romans in 1,000 AD.

In Salamanca, she toured the art museum, an ancient cathedral, the massive, open town square, and the mansion once occupied by Spanish dictator Francisco Franco – and, of course, the University of Salamanca itself.

"The university," she said, "is beautiful."

Find out about careers in Nanotechnology

The program is sponsored by Women in Nanotechnology, a joint program of the US Department of Labor, Truman College, the College of Du Page and the University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC).

Nanotechnology is the science of building machines from single atoms and molecules. The technology is currently in use in the fields of biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, optical electronics, information storage, and manufacturing. Future medical uses could include regenerating tissue, treating brain cancer and viral infections, testing for and eliminating contaminants in food and water, and creating longer acting medicines. Salaries in the field range from $86,000 for those with bachelor's degrees to more than $100,000 for those with doctorates or MDs.

The October 19 event will include a welcome from Deborah Pascal of the Women's Bureau of the Department of Labor and a panel discussion featuring Carly Wobig, a graduate student in nanotechnology at UIC, Sarah Shirk, project director for Women in Nanotechnology at UIC, and Eugene Parker, a UIC admissions counselor. Discussion will focus on transfer to a nanotechnology program at a four-year institution and careers in the field. Mahesh Gurung, assistant professor of Biology at Truman, will discuss the goals for the college's Center for Science Success. Biology Department Chairman Dr. Yvonne Harris will provide the introduction and closing remarks.

For more than three decades, Kevin Phillips has been consistently and "transcendentally right" (as one reviewer has put it) about the dynamics of political change in America and an avid analyst of the role of wealth in democracy. Phillips's best-selling books have influenced presidential campaigns and changed the way America sees itself. Annual Uptown Summer Unity Fest this Saturday

Children will enjoy the petting zoo and carnival games and this year will have a chance to meet some of the characters from the Brookfield Zoo. Older kids and young adults can compete in co-ed basketball shootouts and in skate competitions overseen by Relate Skate, Wilson Yards, UPRISE, and Chi Original. Children and adults can test their martial arts prowess in the annual Rumble on the Lake Karate Tournament held in the gym.

Main stage performers will include the Margaret Murphy Quartet, Alisa Simms, Princes of Futa, Sound Investment, and the Jessie White Tumblers. The Hip Hop Arena, sponsored by Kuumba Lynx and the Hip Hop Initiative, will offer competitions in dance, poetry, rap, and rhyme. Urbanized Music, FM Supreme, and Rod Starz will conduct exhibitions and workshops.

As always, local restaurateurs and business owners will be selling mouthwatering food and unique gift items while local growers offer fresh produce and baked goods at the farmers’ market. Between shopping and eating, fairgoers can take advantage of free health screenings provided by Weiss Hospital.

Truman Cosmetology students will provide free manicures, and if you need an ID, you can get one at the Illinois State ID Van.

Spotlight on Professor Richard Keitel

Richard Keitel does just that. After a day of teaching Introduction to Music and leading the college chorus, he often heads to the orchestra pit of the Oriental Theater on Randolph Street where he is the alternate keyboardist for Chicago's production of Wicked.

Although he has six years of experience teaching music and guiding the jazz band at Moraine Valley Community College, Mr. Keitel has primarily made his living as a professional musician. In addition to his work on Wicked, he is a conductor and arranger and has played keyboards for the Broadway tour of Showboat and was keyboardist and assistant conductor for the Broadway tour of Ragtime.

His strength, then, is in bringing the real and academic worlds together, showing students how to translate what they learn into a career.

"I also teach them how to listen to music," he said. "We're not taught that anymore; it's just thrown at us. I try to challenge students to listen to music on the level it was designed to be listened to."

A Student You Should Know!

Ioana was born in Zalau, Romania. Her mother died when she was just eight years old and as a teenager, she had to work to help support herself. Coming to this country at age 22, she was forced to start all over again, cleaning houses and working in day care and senior centers while learning English.

She began by taking ESL classes at Truman in 2003 and later transferred to the credit program to major in accounting. This fall, she’ll transfer to Roosevelt University to study for a bachelor's degree in accounting, taking night and online classes so she can continue to volunteer full time. Ultimately, she hopes to earn a master's degree in accounting and continue on to law school. She earned a paralegal certificate from Truman in 2005.

When she's not in class or at work as a legal assistant, Ioana volunteers as an administrative assistant for the Midwest Brain Injury Clubhouse, a support center for people with brain related disabilities. She also volunteers as a legal researcher with Hope4kidz and teaches Sunday school at Constantine and Helen Christ Church.

Through it all, Ioana maintains a perfect 4.0 grade point average. She is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, for which she is a member of the 2007 All-Illinois Academic Team, and has been recognized as an International Scholar Laureate in Business. She has been nominated to the National Dean’s List two years in a row and received both a SMARTS scholarship, given to Romanian students, and a Cook County College Teachers Union book scholarship. Recently, she won the Truman College "Speak up" speech contest.

Mike, 35, is a Native American of Navajo, Laguna, Pueblo, and Washo heritage. He grew up in Oakland, CA where he was a member of one of that city's first Native American rap groups.

Moving to Chicago, he taught for Head Start for 14 years before enrolling at Truman. Today, he's working toward transferring to Columbia College where he plans to major in computer animation with a minor in acting. His career goals include working for the Walt Disney company and, eventually, landing a spot as the first Native American performer on Saturday Night Live.

His inspirations include his parents, who stressed good values and appreciation for his heritage, and his wife, whom he calls "one of the strongest women I know and my best friend."

Mr. Anderson, a native Chicagoan, has spent considerable time photographing the grittier edges of the city. He captures the commonplace, forgotten, and neglected structures and artifacts that he feels define our urban landscape. He looks not only for severity, but for beauty and nobility as well.

Mr. Anderson is retired from the Chicago Public Schools where he taught high school English and speech, served as a curriculum coordinator, and later as assistant principal. He has also worked as a high school instructional manager for the central administration, taught graduate level courses, and been a field supervisor for aspiring teachers. When not behind his camera, he creates metal sculpture, studies traditional African drumming, and most recently, soprano saxophone.

City Clerk to speak at TBLC celebration April 26

1st Annual Student Scholars Conference is April 27

The conference will be held on Friday, April 27th from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm in Lecture Hall B.

The purpose of the conference is to motivate students to become research thinkers and writers by contributing to the wider understanding of important ideas in the local and global community. By doing so, we hope to excite the general public about the academic achievement of Truman College students.

This year's SSC's theme is "Living Space, Contested Boundaries: Conquest and Liberty in the Global/Local Dynamic." Ideally, student presentations should work within the parameters of this very broad, abstract theme. However, the student conference committee may accept any student paper that is of a high quality, even if it is not a perfect match for the conference theme.

This event is free of charge and open to the entire Truman College community and surrounding community. Like all academic conferences, guests who come to attend the conference can come or go as they please--selecting those panels or speakers that are of the most interest to them.

The plenary speaker will be Dr. Rebecca Saunders, an Associate Professor of Comparative Literature and English at Illinois State University. Dr. Saunders is a widely published author, academic scholar, public speaker, and radio guest. Dr. Saunders book publications, "On the Concept of the Foreign" and her "Lamentation and Modernity in Literature, Philosophy, and Culture" (forthcoming through Palgrave Press) work through the philosophical and literary ramifications of identity, feminism, power, and justice in a global context.

Photos shed a "Different Light"

Christine has been experimenting with infrared film since starting photography classes at Truman College in 1986. “I had amazing success. I was very lucky,” she said. “I took pictures out at the Chicago Botanic Gardens and they were absolutely beautiful and I was hooked. Infrared, to me, seems to record rather than manipulate, it conveys an emotion or a sense you have when you’re looking at a scene.”

The photographs in In a Different Light were taken in Colorado, Evanston, and during summer fishing trips to Minnesota. Longtime friend Melanie Kallal particularly likes the photos taken during those summer fishing trips, an annual ritual for both.

“As an imaginative storyteller, Chris uses infrared photography to show movement and life in the moments she's captured on film,” she said. “They make me feel like I did when I was there.”

Christine has worked for and/or been a student at Truman College since 1966, when she enrolled prior to pursuing an art major at DePaul University. She has studied with Jan Wessels and Carole Harmel at Truman and is the founder of the college’s arts and literary magazine, Perihelion, for which she was editor in chief. In 1973, she was a founding member of the NAB Gallery in Chicago.

Artist Laurie Sucher to have oil painting exhibit.

Laurie's show, People and Places: An Adjunct's View, is composed of paintings created during her more than 20 years at Truman as an adjunct professor in the Communications Department.

As a painter, Laurie has had more than a half dozen solo shows of her work and been featured in nearly two dozen group exhibitions. She has created illustrations for a children’s book, Night Lights by Barbara Singer, and for a series of books by novelist Margaret Laurence. She is a member of the ARC Gallery in Chicago, the Women's Caucus on Art, the Chicago Artists' Coalition, and the American Jewish Artists Club. Laurie is not only an artist, but also a professional musician and creator of the CD, Diaspora Dreams: Yiddish and Ladino Songs.

In her artist's statement online, Laurie talks about conveying what is unseen through what is seen. "Everything I do creatively is part of the same journey of discovery that I think all of us are on in some way, the journey to understand the meaning of our lives here on this planet," she says. "Our collective sense is that another reality tantalizingly and mysteriously exists alongside what we see. Paradoxically, realism, for me, is the path to that other dimension."

Accrediting associate-degree programs is a new venture for NAEYC and Truman is one of the first institutions signed up for the review process. The NAEYC reps will likely want to interview people working in many areas of the college, not just Child Development, so please be generous with your time if they ask. Founded in 1926, NAEYC is the world's largest organization working on behalf of young children with nearly 100,000 members, a national network of more than 300 local, state, and regional affiliates, and a growing global alliance of like-minded organizations. In 1985, the organization established a national, voluntary accreditation system to set professional standards for early childhood education programs and help families identify good programs. The new accreditation system is designed to recognize high-quality associate-degree programs that prepare early childhood educators.

Thrifty Girl Book Reception

The Cosgrove Library will host a reception for Alexis Steinkamp, Truman's graphic designer and the author of a new book about personal finance, Thrifty Girl Kicks Your Financial Butt, at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, February 21, in the library.

Thrifty Girl is a witty, step-by-step introduction to the basic skills of organizing a budget, tackling debt, controlling spending, and more. Refreshments will be served, and one copy of the book will be given away.

From the boardroom to the city streets.

Truman College will host and exhibit of paintings by Chicago artist Lowell Thompson February 13 through 28 as part of the college’s celebration of Black History Month. Mr. Thompson will speak at a reception in his honor Tuesday, February 13 in the college’s front lobby. The reception begins at 5:30 p.m. Mr. Thompson will speak at 6 p.m.

Mr. Thompson began to paint seriously in 2000 after more than 30 years in advertising. His work, which he calls “Chicago Fer Real,” portrays the city and its inhabitants with a gritty (he actually uses sand in his paint) realism reminiscent of Edward Hopper. He has also been a tireless advocate for African American artists and their work.

As an adman, Mr. Thompson worked for some of the industry’s leading agencies and has won numerous awards, including a Clio for his art direction and co-production of the "Da Bulls" campaign. He has recently published articles in the Chicago Reader and Chicago Life, the latter a supplement to the Sunday New York Times, and his artwork is represented in a growing number of private collections. Deloitte & Touche, the international accounting and consulting firm, recently acquired two of his paintings for their new Chicago building. Mr. Thompson is also featured in Daniel T. Parker's recent book, African Art: The Diaspora and Beyond.

Ever wanted to be a DJ? In one fun and easy hands-on workshop you will learn the basic skills and equipment knowledge it takes to be a DJ from an experienced veteran of the trade.

Using professional DJ equipment, you will learn how to beatmatch and mix, which are fundamental skills for any serious DJ. Get comfortable behind the decks and take the first step toward being a party, club, or band DJ. Whatever genre you prefer, this class will help you start exploring the music you love in a completely new way! The class will be limited to 10 students. No previous experience is necessary.

Erdrich's The Painted Drum is this year's One Book One Truman selection

The Painted Drum consists of three interlocking stories whose characters are connected through their history, their ancestry, and their contact with a mystical drum. It received the Chicago Tribune's Heartland Prize for Fiction as well as the Minnesota Book Award. In 2005, it won the Midwest Booksellers' Choice Award and was listed among the year's best novels by the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and the Christian Science Monitor.

One Book, One Truman 2007 begins today, February 1 when the Cosgrove Library will start giving away 100 free copies of The Painted Drum. Background information and discussion questions will be provided to teachers who use the book in their classes. The program will culminate in mid-March with two open discussion sessions to be held in the Cosgrove Library.

Math can be much more than just a Gen Ed requirement.

The first meeting is from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, February 1 in room 3983. Club activities will include strategy games, interesting math topics, and preparation for the annual math contest sponsored by the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges. Global warming is inconvenient, to say the least.

Davis Guggenheim’s Oscar-nominated documentary is part of the Campus Climate Challenge sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa and the Office of Student Activities.

Each showing of An Inconvenient Truth will be accompanied by discussions, action planning, and a video update by the film’s host, former US Vice President Al Gore. The film will show at 5:45 p.m. Monday through Friday, January 29 through Feb 2, and again at 11:45 a.m. Saturday, February 3. All shows and related events will take place in Novar Hall Theater, room 3426.

History 117 instructor Michael Raleigh has won four Illinois Arts Council grants for his Chicago-based novels and mysteries. History 117 is worth three credit hours, counts toward general education requirements, and is transferrable.

What does African drumming have to do with John Phillip Sousa?

It’ll put a new spin on your favorite tunes and have you dancing a step closer to a degree.

Introduction to Music, Music 121, is a Humanities elective worth three hours of college credit. Truman offers five sections this spring with classes meeting days, evenings, and weekends. The course satisfies general education requirements while managing to be a lot of fun in the bargain. You’ll learn how various forms of music evolved and what each owes to the others. The class includes not only lecture, but recordings and live performances as well. The instructor, Richard Keitel, holds a masters degree in piano performance from Northwestern University and has played keyboard for the Broadway national tours of the musicals Showboat and Ragtime. He is currently a member of the orchestra for the long-running musical Wicked.

Music 121 is also taught by Karen Petersen, a longtime teacher of music and published author who holds masters and doctoral degrees in Musicology from Northwestern.

Chicago Fitness Plus, the Chicago Department on Aging's multi-award winning fitness program, is a fun and accessible way for those age 55 and above to stay fit and active. The program concentrates on the key components to a healthy and independent lifestyle: endurance, strength,

Arun Gandhi to appear in video lecture.

The presentation is the last in the annual PTK Satellite Seminar Series. Participants are invited to stay afterward for a discussion of the issues raised.

Arun Gandhi was born in South Africa and raised under the pall of apartheid. At age 12, he was sent by his parents to stay with his grandfather during a turbulent period in India’s struggle for freedom from Britain. After leading successful projects for economic and social reform in India, Arun Gandhi traveled to the United States to study racism in America. In 1991, he and his wife founded the M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence in Memphis, Tenn.

Phi Theta Kappa is the oldest and largest honor society in American higher education with 1,200 chapters on community college campuses in the United States, Canada, Germany, the Republic of Palau, and the British Virgin Islands. The 2007 Satellite Seminars focused on the theme, Gold, Gods, and Glory: The Global Dynamics of Power.

19th-century Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai knew the power of the ocean.

In Oceanogrpahy 101 - Introduction to Oceanography, you'll learn about the most vast and complex ecosystem on Earth. Learn about the important physical properties that influence the oceans. Discover how oceanographic data are collected and used. Explore the major currents and water masses in the ocean. And find out how the oceans interact with the atmosphere and how these interactions affect our lives - even in Chicago.

Classes, which meet from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturdays starting January 27, will include group discussions, literature reviews, hands-on demonstrations, and multimedia presentations. The course is IAI approved for 3 credit hours of Physical Science general education credit.

Student success and retention are priorities.

The response to the October 17 Student Success and Retention college-wide meeting was excellent. Participants reported that they appreciated the opportunity to meet colleagues from different areas of the college and learned a great deal from each other. A set of action plans was produced that will form the foundation of initiatives to come. Here is a summary of actions that will take place now and in the next term.

*Adult educators and part-time faculty will be organized into groups working on student success and retention programming.

*Administrative liaisons will join each working group to assist in achieving implementation of ideas.

*Existing working groups will seek new members and new group coordinators will be recruited.

*The institutional research position will be filled soon so that we can conduct the studies necessary to support our work.

*In the Spring, there will be monthly forums on student success and retention topics. Faculty and staff will help organize the forums.

*The web page for Student Success and Retention will be updated regularly and will include progress reports on action steps taken.

*Student services offerings will be communicated more actively to help inform the wider College community.

*The working group on at risk students will take an in depth look at the performance of African American males.

*An advising manual and training for faculty will be piloted.

*The coordinators of all student success and retention groups will meet monthly with an administrative steering committee to review progress and promote action.

Political analyst Jeffrey Birnbaum will present Money Talks: Lobbyists and the Power of Money in Washington. A discussion will follow. Birnbaum is an award-winning columnist for the Washington Post, where he writes the popular column, K Street Confidential. He is a political analyst for the Fox News Channel, a regular panelist on PBS' Washington Week, and an on-air commentator for National Public Radio’s Marketplace. He will explore three aspects of money and politics, including how and why money has grown in volume and importance in the political process, what problems the growth of money has created for government policy, and what is being done and what might be done to change things in this area. The program is the third installment of a four-part PTK Honors Satellite Seminar Series, Gold, Gods, and Glory: The Global Dynamics of Power.

How will the Iraq War affect the Middle East?

The Nu Lambda Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa will host the 60-minute video seminar, The Iraq War and its Consequences in the Middle East, with Dan Senor at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 1 in the Student Lounge, room 1623. A discussion will follow. Until the handover of power in Iraq, Mr. Senor was the chief spokesman for the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq and a senior advisor to presidential envoy L. Paul Bremer III. He advised the Bush Administration on a variety of Iraqi strategic policy and communication issues and was the civilian face of the Coalition Authority. In his presentation, he will examine the limits and the potential for America's new approach to influence the Middle East and address the root causes of terrorism. The program, originally broadcast live October 10, is the second installment of the four-part Honors Satellite Seminar Series, Gold, Gods, and Glory: The Global Dynamics of Power.

Truman's first auto show has moved ... inside.

The first ever Hot Rods and Tuners Club Auto Show will run until 6 p.m. today, Thursday, October 12 in the Technical Center's main repair bay. Car owners will compete in five categories with Best in Show receiving $100. The four runners-up will each receive $25. The event will also include raffles of tools and gift cards. Gender and power shape your relationships.

The Nu Lambda Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Truman College will present the 60-minute video seminar, "Gender and Power in Relationships," at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 10 in the Student Lounge, room 1623. The seminar features Dr. Pepper Schwartz, a nationally recognized expert on relationship issues. A discussion, discussion facilitated by Dr. Madeline Troche-Rodriguez of the Truman Social Science Department, will follow the program. Both are free and open to all.

Dr. Schwartz teaches Sociology at the University of Washington in Seattle. She is the author of 14 books, including "The Great Sex Weekend" and "Everything You Know About Love and Sex is Wrong," and lectures internationally on relationship topics. In her presentation, she will discuss the important roles that power and gender play in interpersonal relationships. The program, co-produced by Phi Theta Kappa International and the National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC), is the first in the four-part Honors Satellite Seminar Series, Gods, and Glory: The Global Dynamics of Power.

"The Hours" author to teach Truman class

Michael Cunningham, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of "The Hours," will teach a master class to Truman College students in Max Gulias’ Literature and Film class at 4 p.m. Wednesday, October 11 in the Recital Hall of Northeastern Illinois University. The class precedes Cunningham’s lecture, "Reading Promiscuously: Crossing the Genre Line," which will take place at 8 p.m. in the Northeastern Auditorium. Both the class and the lecture are part of the university’s Presidential Lecture Series.

“Having Michael Cunningham teach my Literature 155 students is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I'm grateful to Northeastern Illinois University and Truman College for making this happen,” Gulias said. “Michael's rich body of work combines both film and literature into one expression.”

Cunningham won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the PEN/Faulkner Award for "The Hours," which was made into an Academy Award-winning movie starring Julianne Moore, Nicole Kidman, and Meryl Streep. Truman to host forum and photo exhibit on Darfur.

Truman College will host a forum, "Uprooted and Warehoused: Refugees from Darfur to Burma," from 4 to 6 p.m. October 5 in the front lobby of the college, 1145 West Wilson Ave. The event will include an opening reception for "Surviving Darfur," an exhibit of photos by Helene Caux, sponsored by the United Nation’s Refugee Agency and National Geographic. The reception will be held from 6 to 7 p.m., also in the lobby. Admission to both events is free.

State Senator Jacqueline Collins will be the keynote speaker for the forum. State Refugee Coordinator Edwin Silverman will be moderator. Forum participants include Rwandan refugee and essayist Clemantine Wamariya, World Relief National Policy Director Jenny Hwang, and Burmese refugee activist Saw Daniel Htun-Lynn.

Mr. Alvarez teaches beginning and intermediate photography for the Continuing Education Department. His ultimate goal is to turn you into a professional photographer - if that's what you want to do.

"I wanted to make it a little more intricate and interesting," he said. "I added many techniques that people can use to learn to take photographs well, not just how to use the camera."

The "pinhole" or "box" cameras are photography at its most basic. They give students a feel for the origins of the craft, when people had to sit stock still for several minutes - their heads sometimes supported by braces - while the image transferred to the film.

"It's one of the reasons you never see people smiling back then," Mr. Alvarez said. "Who wanted to smile when they were doing that?"

Mr. Alvarez learned photography at Truman in the early 1980s. He became good enough that he wondered if he couldn't quit his job managing an Evanston butcher shop and make a living taking pictures. Fate decided for him in 1985 when the shop closed. Newly jobless, he grabbed his camera bag and headed out to the Chicago parks, snapping photos of children's soccer games, adult rugby matches, golfers, anything he came across.

"The next day, I showed them the pictures and they bought them," he said. "And I thought, 'This is good.' "

Eventually, the Hispanic Soccer Association hired him as their photographer, which led to freelance work for professional photography studios. Within a year, he had his own studio. Since then, he has photographed countless Chicago landmarks for real estate and public relations firms and dangled out of a small airplane to shoot farm fields in his native Mexico for a seed manufacturer. He once even found himself face to face with a pair of Bengal tiger cubs at a DePaul University fund-raiser on the 27th floor of the Drake Hotel. The best place for a perfect shot of the cubs, of course, was inside the cage. Less dangerous subjects have included California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and racing champion Richard Petty.

"All these things I would never have been able to do as a butcher," he said. "I would not trade my life for anything. It's just play because I love what I do."

The one thing he loves more than taking pictures is showing others how to do it. Before he began teaching at Truman 13 years ago, he taught photography classes for the Hispanic Association of Photographers and Videographers of Chicago and helped start a photography school at Triangle Camera Inc. on north Broadway. His greatest thrill is having students follow in his footsteps.

"Several years ago, I went back to Triangle Camera, and I encountered a young lady," he said. "I didn't remember her face at all, but she said, 'I was one of your students and I just want to thank you for my career. I'm a full time photographer. I have my own studio and it was all thanks to you.'"

Student Success!

Talisha, 21, enrolled at Truman in January and is majoring in Business Administration. She plans eventually to transfer to Northeastern Illinois University, which has a program on how to create and run nonprofit businesses. Talisha hopes someday to open her own nonprofit computer learning center.

A couple of years ago, none of that seemed possible. Talisha had earned a certificate in Computer Information Systems from Career Colleges of Chicago and was studying the same subject at Robert Morris College, but wasn't sure how long she could last financially.

"Robert Morris was too expensive," she said. "It seemed like every other week I was taking out a loan."

In addition to struggling financially, she was struggling physically and academically. Talisha has cerebral palsy (CP), which impairs her control of movement and makes it hard for her to walk or stand. CP also impairs her ability to learn, which meant that at Robert Morris she had to do twice as much work to keep up with classmates. And after doing so, she discovered that the credits she had worked so hard to earn wouldn't transfer to a four-year college or university.

The TRIO program at Truman, funded by the U.S. Department of Education, turned all that around. Its goal is to provide support services for low-income, disabled, or first generation college students. Those services include peer mentoring, cultural activites one-on-one involvement with faculty, and help with transfer to four-year institutions. For example, TRIO provides Talisha with note takers and tutors who have helped "tremendously," she said. "I mean, I have two tutors who stay with me after hours."

This spring, TRIO has sent Talisha on a trip to the state capitol in Springfield where she won second prize in a poetry contest. Earlier in the year, they sponsored a trip to Northeastern Illinois University so she could tour the campus and learn about the nonprofit management program. With the academic support and enrichment - and Financial Aid footing the bill - Talisha looks forward to a bright future.

"This is it," she said. "This is the school this is where I belong."

Math for Nurses

Nursing instructor Rashida Abdullah will teach Math for Nurses workshops from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 9 and from 5 to 9 p.m. August 15 and 16. Instruction will focus on real-life solutions to common hospital problems, including dose calculation, mathematical conversions (kilos to pounds, for example), and medication administration, as well as legal and ethical issues. The workshops are open to first- and second-year Nursing students, as well as program graduates. The book, which is the text required for Nursing 101, is not included. Students will receive detailed handouts on all topics covered.

Food, music, pony rides, free medical services...

Children will enjoy a ride on a pony or being surrounded by goats and a duck or two in the petting zoo. If the live goats and ducks get to be too much, the kids can read about animals and other things at the Story Book Bus. And when they need to blow off some steam, they can always bounce their way through the Jump Guy’s giant inflatable spaceships. The Clowns to Go and face painters will just to keep up with them.

Kids may cast a wary eye at the back-to-school immunizations and the Dental Van, but their parents will appreciate those and other free medical services, including mammograms and cholesterol screening. Parents will also appreciate being able to buy back-to-school supplies, even if those are the last things on their children’s minds in the middle of summer.

This year’s adult stage will feature local and city performers playing Reggae, Blues, Jazz, and Gospel. The Hip-Hop Stage will feature a break dancing contest and performances of positive rap and spoken word. And, of course, the Unity Fest will once again feature the Rumble on the Lake, the largest Karate tournament in Chicago.

Unity Fest also features a food court and local vendors, door prizes, the State ID van, a farmer’s market, and, of course, the annual festival-closing, high-flying performance by the Jesse White Tumblers.

Don't let this happen to you!

• Whenever possible, always lock your bike to a fixed, but legal, device such as a bike rack or pod.
• Lock your bike in a highly visible, well-lighted location.
• U-Shaped high security locks are among the most theft-resistant locks available. Be aware, however, that knowledgeable thieves are able to defeat many security devices. Accessories are available that reduce the effectiveness of leveraging devices used by thieves to defeat U- locks.
• Quick-release wheels and seats should be secured with a cable, chain, or other security devices available at bike shops.
• Register your bicycle with the Chicago Police Department. Bicycles can be registered at the district at the district near you. If, in spite of all these precautions, your bike is stolen, be sure to report it the police.
• The best advice is saved for last: Thieves' favorite targets are expensive, high-quality mountain bikes. This is obvious, yet too many cyclists persist in riding such "thief-magnets" for daily commuting where distances are short, terrain is flat and a high- dollar, 21-speed, all-terrain bike is really out of place. Even if theft weren't an issue, why put all that daily wear and tear on such a bike? Get a "beater bike" for around-town use. Sure, it could also get stolen, but consider the comparative loss.

The top four winners of this contest will each receive a $500 scholarship toward college. The grand prize winner will have his or her work displayed on Chicago buses and trains this summer. The exhibit includes an information table with free brochures. Take a look at the students' artwork in the lobby and learn how you, too, can help prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS.

Truman's Nu Lambda Chapter honored by several awards

Members of the Nu Lambda Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society earned several awards at the 2006 Illinois Regional Conference at Harold Washington College June 2 and 3.

In addition to Most Distinguished Chapter, Chapter President Fadumo Omar and Public Relations Director Ashley Michelson won Hall of Honor Awards. April Huynh won an Outstanding Chapter Member Award. Advisor Gregory D. Robinson won an Outstanding Chapter Advisor Award and a Horizon Advisor Award from the Regional Coordinator in special recognition of his work. The Nu Lambda Chapter also came in first in the Regional Yearbook Competition and was awarded three registration fee waivers for chapter members to attend the 2006 Regional Convention in October. The course covers all areas of credit analysis, documentation, and file origination, including state and federal regulations, mortgage math, and an introduction to the industry's mortgage software. The Mortgage Loan Processor course covers all areas of file development and document organization. From Level 5 English to dental school in no time flat.

Behzad came to this country from his native Iran in August of 1999 and enrolled that fall in Level 5 English as a Second Language classes at Truman College. A little more than two years later – with stops at Wright and Harold Washington colleges – he had finished all the prerequisites necessary to transfer to a four-year college or university.

He faced a dilemma. Originally, he had planned to go into engineering. Along the way, however, he had developed an interest in biology, no doubt fostered by his brother, Ehsan Moghaddam, who teaches the subject at Truman. Conflicted, he had applied to the University of Illinois at Chicago for biology and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for engineering.

"I got into both," he said, "which just made it harder."

Having had more experience with engineering, he decided to try biology first, for one semester at UIC. He loved it. By the fall of 2004, he had a bachelor’s degree in biology and was applying to dental schools at UIC and Temple University in Philadelphia. He has been accepted to Temple, where his ultimate goal is to become an orthodontist. The profession appealed him in, of all places, his own orthodontist’s office, which he visited regularly to have his braces adjusted.

"You go every month, you know," he said of the trips to the orthodontist. "I just liked what I saw."

Working toward his goal has required hard work, both inside and outside the classroom. Behzad started as a work study when he was a Truman student, eventually becoming an hourly employee. He spent a year working in the college library before joining the Business Office in 2001.

Bob Shiel started practicing yoga to combat boredom on an atoll in Micronesia.

Bob teaches Hatha Yoga for Beginners through the Truman College Continuing Education Division. The class meets at 5:15 p.m. Thursdays and is geared toward beginning and intermediate students. In class, students work on breathing techniques and warm-up exercises, the latter to minimize the risk of injury. Then they build through a series of increasingly challenging poses. Classes finish with a cooling down phase.

Having to cool his heels was what led Bob to yoga. The year was 1979 and he was working as a Peace Corps volunteer on a remote atoll in the Chuuk Islands, about 600 miles southeast of Guam. The pace of life in the tropics was slow, often leaving him with hours to kill.

"Yoga was a physical and intellectual challenge that soaked up a lot of time," he said. "It helped me survive."

After leaving Micronesia in 1983, he continued to practice yoga and in 2000 began training as a yoga teacher, primarily to ensure his own mental, spiritual, and physical health. He earned a basic teaching certificate in 2001, the year he began teaching yoga at Truman, and an advanced certificate in 2005. Throughout, he has enjoyed sharing what he has learned, especially when it benefits his students.

"Not long ago, a brand new student came up to me after class and said she’d been experiencing back pain for two years and had been surviving on Motrin," he said. "She told me that after her first yoga class at Truman, she was pain free for the first time in two years."

Quiet Light: Landscape Photographs by Petr Bednarik

Mr. Bednarik is a student in the Truman College photography classes. He was born in rural Czechoslovakia and holds a masters degree in forestry. When the communist regime collapsed in 1989, he moved to France, working first in the vineyards of Bordeaux, then spending time in a Trappist monastery. Moving back to Czechoslovakia, he studied Czech and international refugee law, eventually establishing a network of refugee centers in South Moravia. He co-founded the Czech Committee for Refugees and worked with refugees in Bosnia-Herzegovina as a representative of the Czech Republic. Since 1997, he has lived and worked in Chicago, where he has won several awards for his photography. As an artist, he searches for images that evoke emotion and avoid what he calls the "cliché of easy beauty and sentimentality." Quiet Light will be up in the President's Gallery through September.

Best-selling author and Pulitzer Prize finalist Luis Alberto Urrea

Mr. Urrea, who will speak at 4 pm. March 15 in Room 3416, is a professor of Creative Writing at the University of Illinois-Chicago and a member of the Latino Literary Hall of Fame. He has written several books, including the Pulitzer finalist The Devil's Highway (2004), an account of the deaths of 12 Mexicans who perished in the Arizona desert while trying to cross the border into the United States. Mr. Urrea is also the author of Across the Wire: Life and Hard Times on the Mexican Border and By the Lake of Sleeping Children: The Secret Life of the Mexican Border.

Though there are other Appliance Technology programs in Illinois, Truman's program covers the widest range of appliances, including refrigeration and air conditioning, washers, driers, dishwashers, ranges, ovens, and microwaves.

In our new evening program, a student will take two classes per semester for five semesters. (Students can also attend day classes to complete the program in three semesters).

And upon completion of our program, your potential employers will literally be calling you. Richard Abrahamson, the program coordinator, routinely takes calls from appliance sellers looking for qualified technicians.

New grant supports low-income, special needs students.

The program is designed specifically for students from low-income families, special needs students, and students who are the first in their families to attend college. The TRIO programs (originally there were just three) were created under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 to help low-income Americans enter college, graduate, and go on to participate more fully in the country's economic and social life.

The Truman Student Support Services program is designed to boost academic performance and ensure that participants complete degrees and transfer to four-year institutions. Students take part in a variety of programs and services, including educational planning sessions, workshops led by faculty mentors, peer tutoring, cultural and social events, and help with transfer planning.

Nationally, students enrolled in TRIO Student Support Services programs are more than twice as likely to remain in college than students from similar backgrounds who did not participate in the program.

Heating costs leaving you cold?

Keep Warm Illinois is Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich's initiative to help state residents, especially the poor and elderly, offset the beating they'll take from the record natural gas prices expected this winter. The workshops, hosted by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity and broadcast at community colleges throughout the state, will focus on insulation, weatherizing, heating, water heating, energy efficient appliances, and lighting. The workshops will last about an hour and include written materials, a video presentation, and a question-and-answer period.

Need a small, but artistic holiday gift?

The Vision Calendar has been published annually since 1999, the photographs on its pages taken by students in classes taught by Carole Harmel, Jeanne McGrail, Darlene Poloniak, and Jan Wessels. This year, students in the Digital Imaging classes were also included.

The calendar is not only a good showcase for the students' work, but sales benefit the Truman Scholarship Fund as well. Calendars are $5 each and will be on sale at the opening. You can also buy them from Jan Wessels, Carole Harmel, or LaSandra Skinner, whose marketing students have been engaged to help sell them.

If you're hunting for a unique Christmas gift, you can also buy any of the original photos from both the 2005 and 2006 Vision calendars. Proceeds also benefit the scholarship fund.

The show will be up through February. The reception is open to everyone; refreshments will be served.

Money matters.

Mr. Mariano teaches three personal finance classes for the college’s Continuing Education Department: Beyond the Basics of Credit and Debt Management, Understanding and Managing Your Life’s Financial Time Horizons, and Comprehensive Advanced Business Essentials Course.

Despite the corporate-sounding titles, each course is designed for people at the other end of the spectrum, those with limited resources who are just starting out.

“It doesn’t matter what you do for a living – waiter, social worker, security guard – the key is knowing how to grow credit and manage your personal resources,” Mr. Mariano said. “Earning a college degree is a lot more difficult than becoming financially secure and solvent.”

Strategies run from the time-tested, like planning ahead and contributing regularly to a savings account, to the arcane. Among these is self-incorporation, which gives individuals the same powers as Fortune 500 companies, including the ability to write off things like day care and travel expenses on their taxes.

“That’s the beauty of the laws in this country,” Mr. Mariano said. “They’re meant to favor the consumer, but unfortunately none of us are aware of how to implement them.”

Students will also learn to repair bad credit, find other sources of income, survive tragedy, illness, job loss, bankruptcy, or divorce, and how to qualify for government assistance. The goal in the end, however, is self-sufficiency, Mr. Mariano said. “I want people not to have to depend on the government or an employer."

Mr. Mariano earned a bachelor’s degree in public accounting from Mercy College in New York and went on to become a certified public accountant. He has more than ten years’ experience as an auditor and personal income tax and financial planning advisor. During his career, he has worked for Arthur Andersen LLP and several Chicago Fortune 500 companies, including Sara Lee and the Chicago Tribune.

Dreams From My Father discussions to be held in March.

Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance recounts Senator Obama's search for his identity as a black man from a multicultural background. Born to a white American mother and a black Kenyan father, he was raised by his mother's family in Hawaii when his parents divorced and his father returned to Africa. After college, he worked in Chicago as a community organizer and later became a civil rights attorney. When his father died, he began a personal odyssey that led him to Kenya and his extended African family.

Obama has said he wrote his memoir "with the belief that the story of my family and my efforts to understand that story might speak in some way to the fissures of race that have characterized the American experience, as well as the fluid state of identity - the leaps through time, the collision of cultures - that mark our modern life."

In January, the Cosgrove Library will give away 100 free copies of Dreams and provide background information and discussion questions to teachers who use the book in their classes. In March, the Truman College Forum will sponsor two discussion sessions on Dreams in the Cosgrove Library.

The Salvation Army will receive the clothing. A variety of donations will go to Together We Cope – Tinley Park Evacuee Center, which is supporting 40 families relocated from Louisiana to the south suburbs of Chicago. Catholic Charities will receive books to help re-build libraries and schools in New Orleans. And the American Red Cross will receive funds both from donations and from the upcoming sale of some of the clothing and other items.

Students are still collecting for victims of disaster in Mexico, Guatemala, India and Pakistan. Collection boxes are in the first-floor east hall outside the Academic and Cultural Club Center, Room 1145.

If you think television shows are bad for your kids,

Children's popular and consumer culture is changing faster and more dramatically than almost any other cultural area. Marketers are targeting even the youngest babies; kids are being advertised to in almost every space they inhabit; messages and products once confined to teens and adults are making their way to children; and marketing and "content" are merging rapidly. Dr. Juliet Schor, professor of Sociology at Boston College, will explore the changing world of children's consumer culture with special emphasis on the role of marketing and its connection to popular culture. In the process, she will look at how commercial messages to children are developed, the cultural products children are now consuming, and how their growing involvement in consumer culture is affecting their well-being.

Before joining Boston College, Dr. Schor taught at Harvard University for 17 years in the Department of Economics and served on the Committee on Degrees in Women's Studies. Her latest book, Born to Buy: The Commercialized Child and the New Consumer Culture, is both an account of marketing to children from inside the agencies and firms and an assessment of how these activities are affecting children. Dr. Schor is also the author of the national best seller, The Overworked American: The Unexpected Decline of Leisure and The Overspent American: Why We Want What We Don't Need. She is currently working on issues of environmental sustainability and their relation to Americans' lifestyles. Dr. Schor also holds a chair in the Economics of Leisure Studies at Tilburg University in the Netherlands and has served as a consultant to the United Nations. She was a fellow at the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation in 1995-1996 for a project entitled "New Analyses of Consumer Society." She has lectured widely throughout the United States, Europe and Japan and appears frequently on national and international television and radio. Profiles on her have appeared in scores of magazines and newspapers, including The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, and People.

The concluding seminar in the Honors series will be Jesus in America: Personal Savior and Cultural Hero November 15.

Digital photography lets you do things you just can't do in a darkroom.

The show, in the President's Gallery in Suite 2230, will run through Thanksgiving. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The artists are former students of Jan Wessels and Alexis Steinkamp. Ms. Steinkamp currently teaches Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Macromedia Flash for the college's Web Design Program in the Continuing Education Department.

Ms. Wessels (www.janwessels.com) teaches Communications Media 167 and Art 200, focusing on Photoshop, other digital darkroom techniques, basic use of a digital camera, and Art 275 and Art 200, for artists and photographers who want to learn to use Photoshop and Illustrator for graphic design or photo manipulation.

Not that darkrooms and traditional methods of photography are dead. They can't be since Ms. Wessels also teaches darkroom techniques for the Continuing Education Department. It's just that they've been relegated more to the realm of art.

After all, Ms. Wessels said, "When the camera was invented, we still had painters."

Documentaries can show you things you never imagined,

Memoirs of a Movie Palace, a 1979 documentary on the last days of the Loew's Kings Theater in Brooklyn, NY will be shown at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, October 20 in Novar Hall, Room 3426 on the college's third floor. The documentary is sponsored by Friends of the Uptown, a group dedicated to finding some way to preserve the Uptown Theater. In its heyday in the 1920s, '30s, and '40s, the Uptown was the crown jewel of the neighborhood's thriving entertainment industry, able to seat more than 4,000 people for a movie. Both it and Loew's Kings were designed by the same architects and built at about the same time. Each has suffered a similar fate. Details: (773) 250-7665 or www.uptowntheatre.com.

Seoul Train, a documentary on North Korean refugees who risk imprisonment or death to flee their homeland through China, will be shown at 6 p.m. Monday, October 24 (United Nations Day) in Novar Hall, 3426, on the college's third floor. The film, free and open to the public, will be followed by presentations by Dori Dinsmore, Midwest Regional Director of Amnesty International, and Dr. Kyu Young Park, of the Korean Institute at Northeastern Illinois University. Future Search didn’t explode and fade away.

Future Search isn’t, or wasn’t, just a seminar. It’s a process for finding common ground, developing a shared vision, and taking concrete action on that vision. Truman’s Future Search seminar, September 29 through October 1 at Harold Washington College, involved nearly 80 representatives from all areas of the college.

On the last day of the seminar, those 80 people, having identified challenges and opportunities most critical to the college, formed action groups to address them. These groups are: Global Task Force, Student Support Services, Information Booth, Technology, Partnership, Hiring Full-Time Faculty, Communication-Collaboration, Teaching and Learning, Diversity, Mutual Respect, and, of course, Parking.

The groups are not idle assemblages or exercises. In fact, the first thing on their agenda at the seminar was to set dates for future meetings. They spent the next two hours deciding what needed to be done and how and who was going to do it. The groups are not static, either. Much of what you will hear Tuesday afternoon will concern the progress they’ve made and how you can help.

The group working on hiring full-time faculty, for example, is beginning to collect information from various departments on full-time and adjunct faculty with an eye toward forming a hiring advocacy committee. They plan to present regular reports to the faculty council and the president and create statement that communicates value of a robust full-time faculty.

The Student Support Services group’s goals include forming a retention committee, creating a support services awareness day, broadening the college’s focus on customer service, revamping the student support services web site, creating more and clearer signs for the halls, and creating a centralized student services area.

Please join us in the lobby at 3 p.m. Tuesday. The college’s future certainly depends on you.

You’ll park,

We will not, at first, lose as many spaces as anticipated, but students, faculty, and staff will all have to park in different places. Students will park where faculty and staff now park, on the northern end of the lot. Faculty and staff will park on the tennis courts and the lot next to it at the south end of the college. Cars parked in the wrong places will be removed by Lincoln Towing.

Everyone – students, faculty, and staff – will enter the parking lot as usual, through the Broadway tunnel entrance. Security personnel will be on hand to give directions. Students will exit on Broadway as well. Faculty and staff may exit on Clifton, at the south corner of the lot next to the tennis courts, but this will be AN EXIT ONLY. No one will be permitted to enter on Clifton as it will cause too much traffic congestion in the neighborhood. To keep traffic flowing smoothly in the lots, students must exit at Broadway only.

"Fashion Culture: The Changing Role of Dress in Society" is the second in a series of five Honors Satellite Seminars sponsored by the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

The annual series, sponsored by the national office of PTK, features interactive presentations by nationally known experts on topics related to the 2005 Phi Theta Kappa Honors Study Topic, "Popular Culture: Shaping and Reflecting Who We Are." Students can call in or email questions for presenters. Follow-up discussions will be facilitated by Truman faculty.

Tuesday's seminar, given by Dr. Valerie Steele, will explore the changing role of fashion in culture from 1945 to the present, concluding with a look at today's emphasis on celebrity and glamour. Dr. Steele is director and chief curator of the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and founding editor of Fashion Theory: The Journal of Dress, Body and Culture. She is the author of numerous books, including Women of Fashion: Twentieth Century Style; Fifty Years of Fashion; China Chic: East Meets West (with John S. Major); and Fetish: Fashion, Sex & Power. Her book, The Corset: A Cultural History, was listed as one of the "25 Books to Remember, 2001" by the New York Public Library. Her articles and essays have appeared in periodicals from Aperture to Vogue. In 2002, she received an Iris Foundation Award for Distinguished Service to the Decorative Arts. Dr. Steele has lectured extensively in the United States and abroad and has appeared on Good Morning America, The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Today Show, Fashion Television, and Paris Modes.

How far can you go with an associate degree?

Truman graduate Catherine Gierman-Riblon is Associate Dean of the School of Health Careers and Public Service Programs at Triton College, a community college in River Grove, IL. As such, she has the "front line" responsibility for the college's Nursing, Allied Health, Fire Science Technology, Health, and EMT programs. Thirty years ago, however, she was a high school graduate with dim prospects of ever seeing the inside of an institution of higher education.

"In the '70s, women were teachers, nurses, or secretaries," she said. "I was always a good student, but neither of my parents were college educated and neither saw the need to send a girl to college. So I married my high school sweetheart at the age of 18 and he went to college and I went to work."

For several years, it was as a secretary to the president of a division of Smucker's, the jams and jellies company. But after her daughter, Jennifer, who was born in 1978, hit the toddler stage, Ms. Gierman-Riblon decided she wanted to go not back to work, but back to school. This time, it was not only with her parents' blessing, but their help as well.

"By then, they thought it was just the greatest thing, because they got to have the first grandchild around all the time," she said. "They saw the change in education, too."

After completing her prerequisite general education and science classes through distance education, she enrolled in Truman's nursing program in the fall of 1981. Two years later, armed with an associated in applied sciences degree in nursing, she was working in critical care in a hospital, followed by providing ambulatory care for a family practitioner. After her second child was born in 1986, she moved from providing direct nursing care to teaching others how to do it. She signed on with Northwestern Business College, which was just then launching its Allied Health Division, becoming the first coordinator of the Associate Degree Medical Assisting Program. She was later appointed department chairman, in which capacity she helped implement programs in Health Information Technology, Massage Therapy, and Medical Billing and Coding. She continued her own education as well, earning a bachelor's degree in Allied Health Education from Northeastern, again through distance education. This time, however, she could use the Internet. In 2002 and 2003, she earned a post-baccalaureate certificate and a master's degree in education, respectively, from Penn State University, both of them entirely online.

"It was great!" she said. "I learned so much just from the experience itself that it sparked my interest and I ended up doing my thesis on what it takes to support the success of female returning students with multiple life responsibilities who are taking online courses."

Journalism Guest Speaker Series continues October 12

The Journalism Guest Speaker Series, sponsored by Benjamin Ortiz for his News Reporting and Writing class, brings in professional journalists to speak to students -- and anyone else who would like to attend. Lectures will be held at 11:30 a.m. in room 2106.

The next speaker, on October 12, will be Angela Caputo, a staff writer at the Pioneer Press News-Star who covers neighborhood news and public interest issues, many of them concerning Uptown and other North Side neighborhoods.

October 26 -- Also covering local neighborhood news, Medill School of Journalism graduate Jeff Kelly Lowenstein reports for the South Shore Community News and has freelanced for National Public Radio, the Chicago Tribune, Boston Herald, Daily Southtown, and The Common Review.

November 28 -- Founder and editor-in-chief of the bi-monthly culture and politics magazine, Punk Planet, Dan Sinker developed some of his best ideas on a skateboard at the Wilson skate park, where he also dreamed up Bail magazine and Punk Planet Books. Sinker will talk about do-it-yourself journalism and publishing.

December 7 -- World Press prize-winning photojournalist Jon Lowenstein has exhibited his work locally and in the pages of Mother Jones, US News & World Report, Fortune, The New York Times, and Chicago Magazine, among other publications.

The stage is set for Future Search

One of Truman College's greatest strengths is its cultural, ethnic, and ideological diversity. The problem is that diversity also makes it hard for us to speak with one voice, to tell one story. We are, after all, many things to many people.

By now, most of you have heard about Future Search. It is a process that engages people from across the college - faculty, staff, administrators, and members of the community - to create a shared vision of and for Truman College.

On September 29 and 30 and October 1, eighty-one representatives from all areas of the college will gather at Harold Washington College to talk about Truman's past, its present, trends affecting the college, and its ideal future. They will identify common ground and create action plans. When the process is complete, we will have a sense of common destiny, of who we are, what we can achieve, and the steps for achieving it. We will be better able to predict and meet challenges, market the institution, and create new programs to better serve students. Future Search is the first step toward shared governance. The entire process will be formally documented and follow-up sessions have been planned as much as a year in advance.

Although you may not be able to take part in the three-day conference, your voice has to be heard. Treat the 81 conference attendees as delegates, each of whom carries the wishes of constituents to a convention. Talk to them. Give them written suggestions. Make sure they know your heart and mind as they enter the process September 29. Each delegate will be nominated by one of the department representatives listed below. Contact these nominators and either tell them to take your input to the conference or give you the name of someone who can. This process is for all of us, so it must be carried out by all of us.

Parking lot entrance on Broadway is open again -- early

The Broadway entrance to Truman College's parking lot is open again, half a day ahead of schedule.

The Department of Water Management has been fixing and upgrading the water mains and sewers along Broadway, the work in front of our entrance originally scheduled to be finished late today.

Since Tuesday morning, students and staff have been asked to use the CTA entrance to the parking lot on Montrose, just west of Broadway.

Web design could be for you

We can see the future and it's filled with web pages. Everybody wants one. Everybody will need one. And they'll come to you to design them. Or they should, if they know what's good for them. Drawing on your creative skills and general computer knowledge, Truman College's Web design program will introduce you to image creation, site architecture, page layout, animation and coding -- in short, everything you need to begin a career in web design. If you're not sure you want to begin a career in web design, take Intro to Web Design from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 6. It's only $29 and three hours out of your life and you'll know for sure. Join the left-leaning liberal media. Join the right-leaning conservative media. Or just learn how to report the news accurately and without bias, like a journalist is supposed to. In English 151-News Reporting and Writing, instructor Benjamin Ortiz will teach you real-world journalism skills, everything from finding an idea to shaping a finished story. The class includes guest speakers from the Chicago mainstream and alternative media, as well as forays into the community for hard news and features. In fact, students in English 151 make up the bullk of the staff for Truman College's new campus newspaper, the Uptown Exchange. News Reporting and Writing meets 11 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.

Learn French this fall at Truman

What do California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and cartoon skunk/cat lover Pepé Le Pew have in common? They are among the 600 million people worldwide, most of them not cartoons, who speak French.

At Truman College this fall, you, too, can learn the language that's the official language of the United Nations, the International Olympic Committee, the International Red Cross, and 33 countries, not to mention being spoken widely in another 10. Your fellow French speakers, in addition to Messrs. Schwarzenegger and Le Pew, will include Elton John, Gwyneth Paltrow, Johnny Depp, Julio Iglesias, Lance Armstrong (mais oui), Lisa Kudrow and Matthew Perry, Mick Jagger, Morgan Freeman, Natalie Portman, Orlando Bloom, Robin Williams, Sting, and William Shatner (Beamez moi up, Scotty!).

Plus, you will knock out that language requirement with a new teacher who's inspired and full of fresh ideas. She often quotes the medieval king, Charlemagne, who said, among other things, "To have another language is to possess a second soul."

Train for a career in Appliance Technology

In the nine years that Richard Abrahamson has been teaching Truman College's Appliance Technology program, he thought he had failed only once to find a student a job.

Happily, it turned out that he was wrong. As the student, a graduate of Richard's first class in 1996, walked into his office and began complaining, the phone rang.

"It was an employer who had interviewed the student earlier," Richard said. "He was on the phone, making the student a job offer as we stood there."

Fly into August with the annual Unity Fest

Alderman Helen Shiller's Uptown Summer Unity Fest gets a little bigger and a little better every year. And this year's fest, which runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 23 in the central mall at Truman College, is getting a little more artsy and mobile as well.

Most of the health screenings and some of the newer children's entertainment will be not in tents, on stages, or in the college buildings, but in vans parked at the junction of Racine and Sunnyside at the south end of the mall. That leaves plenty of room for the rock, blues, reggae, and funk playing on the main stage, as well as the Kuumba Lynx Hip-Hop Arena for kids taking part in the rap, spoken word, and break dance competitions.

New this year is a partnership between Truman and the Creative Alliance of Uptown, who will co-sponsor an arts fair as part of the festival. Truman will use the front lobby to showcase about 50 pieces of work by students in Spring 2005 art classes, including drawings, paintings, and photographs. At 1 p.m. in the O'Rourke Theater across the mall from the main college building, student choral singers will perform under the direction of Drew Waters, a former Truman music student. Other activities will include free ceramics lessons and an "Instrument Petting Zoo," the latter sponsored by the People’s Music School.

Truman College will offer Summer Science Camp

Truman College will host a Summer Science Camp for Chicago high school students from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in July and August beginning today, July 12. (There is still time to sign up.) The camp is free, supported by a grant from the National Institutes of Health. Participants will meet in the Biology Department of the college at 1145 W. Wilson Ave., just west of the Wilson Red Line El stop. Activities will include hands-on work in the lab and field trips to collect specimens. Students will learn the concepts and basic techniques of modern molecular biology, the biology of organisms, and ecology. Instruction will include culturing and transforming bacteria, isolating plasmids, and techniques in gel electrophoresis. The first half of the semester will focus on hands-on laboratory techniques. The second half will be devoted to understanding the diversity of flora and fauna and their intricate relationship with the environment. Students will also learn how they can help preserve ecosystems in the Chicago area.

Staying in step with the mortgage business

The mortgage business is getting tighter than a row of city houses. When David Daniels started ten years ago, there were no schools for loan originators. He simply walked into a mortgage company, asked for a job, and proceeded to learn it as he went along.

These days, the mortgage industry is in what Daniels, head of Truman College's Office of Mortgage Loan Technology, calls "a constant state of flux." The State of Illinois is tightening rules and regulations and clamping down on how much mortgage companies can charge in commissions. Add to that lowering rates and stiff competition, especially in large urban areas like Chicago.

In an effort to help originators and underwriters keep up, Daniels is offering courses in Mortgage Loan Originator, Mortgage Underwriting, and Mortgage Loan Processor this fall through Truman's Continuing Education Department. Originator and Processing run August 27th to October 15th and Underwriting begins October 25th and runs through December 6th.

Have time for lunch ... and a movie?

Are you spellbound? Were you born rich (or wish you had been)? Do you want to know why some people think George W. Bush is ruining America or simply follow him around for awhile and decide for yourself. Or do you just want to know a little bit about cleavage and stupidity?

Whatever your area of interest Truman student Claudia Leczynski has a documentary to cover it. She's one of the founders of Reel Activists (REACT), a group of fans and filmmakers of the documentary genre, who believe these films are excellent tools for motivating people to get involved in grassroots causes. To that end, she and her fellows are offering a series of free documentaries through August 24 to be shown at 12:30 p.m. Wednesdays in the Satellite Room, room 3416, at Truman College. Each film will be followed by an informal discussion of issues raised by filmmakers.

Environmental Awareness Day is May 27

Tomorrow, Friday, May 27, is International Environmental Day at Truman College. The event, formerly known as Planting Day, is a chance for faculty, staff, administrators, and students to work together to beautify the campus and focus on environmental protection. This year's event, sponsored by the National Union of Ogoni Students International at Truman, is broader in scope than in years past. In addition to the garden work, the event will include a continental breakfast, a luncheon, and a keynote address by Dr. Anghesom Atsbaha, social science instructor for Truman and DePaul University, on local and global environmental issues. Environmental Awareness Day will also include a showing of the documentary Delta Force: The Ogoni Travails, highlighting the plight of the Ogoni people, an ethnic minority in the Niger Delta of Nigeria, and the effects of oil and gas exploration on their lives and fragile ecosystem.

In addition to Dr. Atsbaha, guests will include Dr. Vincent Idemyor, President of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP-USA); Dr. James Montgomery, Chairman of Environmental Sciences at DePaul; as well as a representative from US Senator Barack Obama's office. The Uptown Exchange is here

The first issue of the Uptown Exchange, Truman College's new student newspaper, has hit the street. The inaugural issue features stories and editorials on such issues as the college's parking problems, student activity fees, fallout from last year's teachers' strike, cycling in Uptown, and the future of the Truman gym.

The paper, with layout by Joseph Hill, is the first student publication to make it into production at Truman in more than a decade. Editors and writers are students in the journalism and newspaper classes taught by Benjamin Ortiz, who serves as the paper's advisor.

Copies of the Uptown Exchange are available in the cafeteria, the Student Lounge, Admissions and Advising (room 1112), the security desk in the front lobby, and the college mailroom.

ESL students visit ABC anchor Linda Yu

Students in Ana King's Advanced Integrated ESL 100 class were treated to a private news broadcast of sorts when four of them visited ABC 7 News anchor Linda Yu at the station's downtown studio recently.

The students, who have been working in teams to examine aspects of heritage, language, and cultural identity, finished the semester by interviewing professionals dealing with such issues in social service agencies, schools, and news organizations.

"These students often talk about the challenges associated with maintaining their native languages, values, and traditions while adapting to mainstream American culture," Ms. King said. "They constantly question what it means to be an 'immigrant', an 'American', and a 'hyphenated American', so giving them a chance to explore these issues results in meaningful research, reading, and writing activities both inside and out of the classroom."

Graduation is more than food for thought

As part of the annual "Project Graduation: Feed a Body, Feed a Mind," members of the Nu Lambda chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society have organized a drive to collect non-perishable food and/or children's books for two community based organizations, Cornerstone Community Center and the Hull House Uptown Head Start Program. Drop-off sites at the college are the Mailroom, Room 1428, or the Academic and Cultural Club Center, Room 1145. Both will be open through May 27.

Early childhood literacy conference is May 14

If you think it's important to instill an early, lifelong love of reading in children, plan to attend Cultivating the Seeds of Literacy, a professional development conference offered May 14 at Truman College. The conference is sponsored by Hug-a-Book, a literacy program of Family Focus.

The half-day conference will focus on creative early literacy activities and how those activities meet standards. Participants will be eligible to receive either CPDU credits or in-service hours.

Literary Festival begins Monday

Truman College's second Literary and Speech Festival will be held Monday, April 25 through Thursday, April 28 in Novar Hall on the college's third floor.

The festival will feature student performances and presentations inspired by the literature currently being studied in their classes. English, the Humanities, the Bilingual Learning Community, English as a Second Language, Creative Writing, Children's Literature, and William Shakespeare (the guy on the left over there) will all be represented.

Highlights of the festival include a play by members of Truman College's GEAR-UP program, performances by the Truman Chorus, and Speak Up, the annual public speaking contest hosted by instructor Franklin Reynolds for Truman speech students. A complete schedule is available on line.

Extreme Humans

Dr. Warren Lockette of the University of California-San Diego Division of Internal Medicine will give a lecture titled "Astronauts, Navy SEALs and F14 Tomcat Pilots - Human Performance in Extreme Environments" at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Thursday, April 21 in Novar Hall on the third floor of the college. The lecture is free.

When it comes to human performance in extreme environments, Dr. Lockette knows what he's talking about. In addition to his duties at the University of California, he is also head of the Clinical Investigation Department at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego and Special Assistant to the Commander of the Naval Special Warfare Command. He has also undergone the Navy's Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training, generally agreed to be among the toughest in the Armed Services. Dr. Lockette has won more than a dozen professional awards, including an NAACP award for helping the SEALS with their diversity and recruiting programs, and has written more than a hundred research papers, abstracts, articles, and book chapters.

Augustin Portillo's paintings are on display at Truman

Augustin Portillo does not come across as a firebrand.

In fact, it is a rare moment in conversation with him that he is not either smiling or looking for an opportunity to do so. That's unless he's talking earnestly about his art or giving you his undivided attention. He hardly seems the kind of person who would paint anti-government graffiti across a public building and be kicked out of his country for doing it.

His most recent series of paintings, America I, on display at Truman College through the end of May, is equally disarming.

Truman's annual open house is March 15 through 17

At the annual Truman College Open House next week, you can have your fortune told. You can eat lunch. You can meet Shawn Knight, the "Knight Rider" of Power 92, and WVAZ's Ramonski Luv. You can even play What's My Line?

More to the point, you can discover that attending Truman College for two years will not only prepare you for whatever you want to do next, be it find a job or continue at a four-year-college, but it will save you a lot of money in the bargain.

This year's open house runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, March 15 and 16, and from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 17. Events are open to anyone interested in learning more about Truman's academic programs and student services. Teachers and staff will set up booths in the cafeteria to showcase various programs and have snapped up all the college's audiovisual and computer equipment in an effort to make things interesting. A few of them, including chemistry teacher Charlie Abrams, might even throw in a cooking demonstration or encourage audience members to do the "Molecule Dance." And there are always the fortune tellers and What's My Line?, both of which are open to visitors and will run most of each day.

Pegasus Players to premiere David Barr's The Upper Room

John Biggers would have been a plumber had it not been for his teacher, an Austrian Jew escaping the Nazis in the late 1930's.

As it is, Biggers became a celebrated muralist, one of a new post-war generation of influential black artists and educators. His teacher, Viktor Lowenfeld, would be credited with not only mentoring many of these talented painters and sculptors, but for exposing them, their communities and their country to the beauty and power of traditional African and African American art as well.

Their relationship, and the mark it left on both the art world and American society, is the central theme of The Upper Room, a new play by David Barr III currently being produced by Pegasus Players. The show runs through April 10 in the O'Rourke Theater next door to Truman College.

Truman to celebrate Sudanese ceasefire February 19

Truman College will host a ceremony celebrating the permanent ceasefire in Sudan at noon Saturday, February 19 at the college, 1145 West Wilson Ave. The event, part of the college's Black History Month activities, is sponsored by several citywide agencies and organizations, including the Human Relations Commission's Advisory Council on African Affairs and Refugee and Immigrant Affairs and the Heartland Alliance.

Over the last three years, Truman College has enrolled more than 200 "Lost Boys," children orphaned by the civil war in Sudan. Current and former students, many of whom still live in the area, will be present for the event, as will members of Chicago's various African communities. Coordinators here at the college include Prof. Anghesom Atsbaha, who teaches Social Science and African history at Truman and is originally from Eritrea, and John Ngugi of the Admissions Office who came to this country from Kenya.

The January 5 ceasefire, signed in Nairobi, Kenya and attended by U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, ended 21 years of armed conflict between Christians and animists in southern Sudan and the mostly Muslim government in the north More than 2 million people died and more than 30,000 children, mostly young boys, were orphaned. These Lost Boys, as they came to be called, eventually found refuge in Kenya and, from there, in other cities around the world.

Black History Month at Truman College

Carter G. Woodson was the son of former slaves, raised on hardship and hard work, who spent his childhood working the family farm, toiled in the coal mines of West Virginia as a teenager, and didn't enter high school until the age of 20.

He went on to earn a doctorate from Harvard University, only the second black American to do so, and became a renowned teacher, historian, and author whose enduring gift was to raise African American history from footnote to the spotlight

In addition to teaching and writing extensively about black history, Dr. Woodson established the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, now the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History, and founded the Journal of Negro History. In 1926, he launched Negro History Week, which eventually became the four-week celebration we know as Black History Month.

Students, faculty, and staff planning this year's Black History Month events at Truman have kept faith with Dr. Woodson's ideals.

Continuing Education offers security officer training

If you're thinking of going into law enforcement, especially the private sector, Steven Dick will make sure you're prepared.

This semester, he'll teach Basic Security Officer Training, Jan. 24 to Feb. 16, and Firearm Certification Training, Feb. 21 to Mar. 16, for the college's Continuing Education Department. The same classes, along with Tactical Baton Training, will also be offered during the Spring II semester in March and April.

His goal is to give students the most up to date and thorough training possible.

"I am a stickler about individual professional treatment of people when you're on the job working," he said. "I really demand a high amount of professionalism."

ESL teacher wins national journalism award

Roxane Assaf, who teaches English as a Second Language for Truman's Adult Education Department, is a 2004 winner of a national Mark of Excellence Award from the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ). The award is given annually to student journalists working in print, visual and online media. Ms. Assaf won in the Television General News Reporting category for Illegal Carlos, a story on illegal immigrants she produced for WYCC -TV while studying for her master's degree at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism.

She and other winners were chosen from among 3,200 entries. SPJ judges called her entry "a balanced story incorporating good use of visuals and natural sound."

The Guardians of Eating Out

Listening to Ronald Cooper can be sickening, what with his seemingly limitless knowledge of E. coli, salmonella and a host of other food-borne illnesses. But if you pay attention in class, you'll keep thousands of people from actually getting sick.

Mr. Cooper, chief cook and bottle washer for Cooper's Food Sanitation and Inspection Services (CFSIS) and a former Chicago health inspector, will teach Food Service Sanitation this spring for Truman's Continuing Education Department. State and local governments require that food service establishments be under the direction of someone with a valid State of Illinois Food Service Sanitation Manager's Certification. Applicants successfully completing Mr. Cooper's state-approved 15-hour course and passing the state exam will be eligible to apply for both state and City of Chicago licenses.

The class is ideal for someone who wants to open a restaurant or works in one and wants to earn a valuable promotion.

Communications Chair to serve on national advisory committee

Alan Meyers, professor of English and Chairman of Truman College's Communications Department, has been elected to a three-year term on the Executive Committee of the Board of the Association of Departments of English (ADE), a branch of the Modern Language Association. The committee has 12 members, only two of whom are chosen from community colleges.

The ADE, founded 40 years ago, serves as a source of information and support for chairs of college and university English departments in the United States and Canada. The organization also provides perspective to and from various members and on the profession of teaching English as a whole. Membership includes nearly 750 English departments, writing programs, and humanities divisions in four- and two-year colleges and universities.

Mr. Meyers has been teaching at Truman since 1976, the year the college was built. In addition to his duties as teacher and department chair, he is the author of Writing with Confidence and Composing with Confidence, which will go into their eighth and seventh editions, respectively, this year. He is also the author of Gateways to Academic Writing, also scheduled to be published in 2005.

Creating art and writing from life

The woman, a survivor of a violent childhood and a violent marriage, came to a poetry workshop run at the shelter by writer and artist Lauren Mathews. Participants were encouraged to write and read poems and invite responses from listeners.

Halfway through reading her poem aloud, the woman burst into tears.

"She was able to finish and when she did, she said, 'I started crying not because of what I wrote, but because somebody listened,'" Ms. Mathews said. "She learned that people cared and that people will listen."

Such is Ms. Mathews' belief in the transformative power of writing and art that she has made a career of ensuring that anyone who wants or needs that power can have it. Starting January 18, she will teach her From Life Series: Creating Art and Writing from Life for Truman's Continuing Education Department. The workshops are designed for students at any level of writing or artistic skill who want to find or improve their powers of self expression and personal discovery.

Did anyone put a quarter in the meter?

There's a car in the lobby of the Truman Technical Center.

It's a Saturn L-Series, donated by Saturn of Chicago, and much of its exterior has been removed so you can see its innards, sort of like the "Visible Man" models toymakers manufacture for kids.

Harold Santamaria, who heads the Automotive Technology program, has several explanations for how the car came to be in the Technical Center lobby. He may start by telling you that it was delivered out front, on Sunnyside Drive, and that he and his students spent all night taking it apart and rebuilding it inside.

If you don't buy that - and you shouldn't - he'll tell you that Saturns aren't as tall as they look and that he and the students just had to turn it on its side and squeeze it through the front door.

Don't buy that either.

Registration for Spring 2005 is now open

Registration for the spring 2005 semester is now open. You can register online through the SOARS system or in person in the lobby. Lobby registration will be open through December 11 from noon to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fridays, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays. Thereafter, you may register in the Admissions and Advising Center, Room 1112.

Registering early is the best way to ensure that you not only get the classes you want, but spend the least amount of time doing it. In-person registration will be open again in the lobby from January 18 to 22. Late registration, which is actually the final week of on-time registration and does not require payment of a late fee, will be held January 24 through 29. The add/drop period, which does require the late fee, will be held January 31 through February 5.

Classes begin Monday, January 31. Weekend classes begin Friday, February 4.

Honor societies will induct new members tonight

The Phi Theta Kappa and Psi Beta honor societies will hold a joint induction ceremony at 6 p.m. today, Thursday, December 2, in the Faculty Dining Room at the back of the cafeteria. This is the first joint induction ceremony held by the two organizations.

Phi Theta Kappa has a long tradition at Truman. Members of the college's Nu Lambda chapter have organized and run a number of programs, within and outside the institution. In 2000, they were hosts for the regional PTK convention here in Chicago and recently ran a successful book drive and sale, something they do annually. During the recent teachers' strike, PTK members created a Student To Student program to provide up to date information on classes and negotiations. PTK maintains a five-star rating, the highest awarded by the national office.

The Truman chapter of Psi Beta, a national honor society for community college psychology majors, recently celebrated its first birthday. Earlier this year, chapter members received the national Psi Beta-Ann Robinson College Life Award, which recognizes programs that improve the quality of life at community colleges and advance the discipline of psychology. Truman won for a week-long series of workshops on coping with stress that was given at the college last year.

Speech students 'Speak Up' for prizes

You're invited to the final round of Speak Up, the annual public speaking contest hosted by Franklin Reynolds for Truman speech students. The event will be held at 7 p.m. November 23 in Novar Hall on the college's third floor. Refreshments will be served.

The contest is sponsored by the President's Office, Student Activities, Beck's Books, Connexio Cafe, Jimmy John's, Borders, and Starbucks. Students in Speech 101, Section TUY, help run the tournament. Honorary co-host for the event will be Jamie Mantick, winner of last year's Speak Up.

Each year, 30 students, two from each speech class, are nominated by classmates. They then compete in preliminaries, the top six moving on to the final. Speeches are informative in nature and cover a variety of topics. Jamie won last year with a speech on tattoos.

First Nations Film and Video Festival runs through Nov. 21

The American Indian Center, several blocks west of Truman College on Wilson, will present the Eighth Annual First Nations Film and Video Festival November 15 through 21. The seven-day festival will play out at 10 venues in Chicago, including Truman College on November 20, and showcase 42 films by, about, or starring Native Americans.

This year's event marks the Chicago premier of Restless Native Productions' American Indian Graffiti. Also showing will be Rod Pocowachit's Dancing on the Moon. Pocowahit and fellow director Ernest M. Whiteman III will be at the American Indian Center November 19 for the festival's "opening" reception. On November 17, in conjunction with Columbia College, director Chris Eyre will present From Dances With Wolves to Smoke Signals: Re-inventing Indians On Screen. Other filmmakers represented at the festival will include Shelley Niro, Gil Cardinal, Randy Redroad, and many more. Festival committee members will lead audience discussions after every program.

Admission to all events is a donation. At the Truman College event, sponsored by Red Path Theater Company, admission is free for college students and staff.

Satellite seminar focuses on sports and popular culture

Dr. Richard Lapchick, an internationally known expert on sports, their history, culture and ethics, will present Sports in Popular Culture: Are We Winning or Losing?, a live, interactive satellite seminar, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. November 16 in the Satellite Learning Center, Room 3416. Introductions will begin at 6 p.m. A discussion will follow the presentation.

Dr. Lapchick is chairman of the DeVos Sports Business Management Program at the University of Central Florida and director of the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport. He is also president and CEO of the National Consortium for Academics and Sport and director emeritus for the Center for the Study of Sport in Society, which he founded at Northeastern University in 1984. A human rights activist and pioneer for racial equality, he led TEAMWORK-South Africa, an early '90s project designed to improve race relations through sports and boost sports development in post-apartheid South Africa. Dr. Lapchick's tenth book was published in November 2001 with a foreword by Muhammad Ali. He is also a regular columnist for the Sports Business Journal and the Sporting News.

In his satellite presentation, Dr. Lapchick will explain why sports are an integral part of American popular culture, outline the growing pains they've experienced in order to assure diversity and equality, and discuss the cultural environment that engenders negative role models.

This is the fifth and final presentation in the Honors Satellite Seminar Series, Popular Culture: Shaping and Reflecting Who We Are, co-sponsored by the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society and the National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC).

KERRY WINS ... at Truman College

Call the vote counters. Tell them to pay their Ohio motel bills. We're ready to sway the election right here on the college's second floor. Eighty percent of students in Truman College's Adult Education Program chose John Kerry as our next president.

Eight hundred students took part in the mock election devised by Jeff Libman, who teaches the College Prep level of English as a Second Language (ESL). The idea was to involve his foreign-born students in the American political process. They began discussing the election in class a week before November 2. On the day, as many as wanted to could pick up a card with Senator Kerry's and President Bush's names on it and simply put a check mark next to their choice. Each vote was sealed in an envelope and dropped in a cardboard box, thereby avoiding the problem of hanging chads. Jeff and student volunteers kept a running tally on the blackboard in their classroom. Dan Rather was nowhere in sight.

If not binding, Truman's ESL Election 2004 was certainly civilized, sort of like the real one, only nicer. No one called a lawyer.

TESOL Peace Forum has been canceled

The TESOL Peace Forum scheduled for November 6 at Truman College has been canceled due to the strike by full-time City Colleges of Chicago teachers. It will not be rescheduled.

TESOL, Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, is an international education association founded in 1966 and based in Alexandria, VA. TESOL has approximately 13,000 members in more than 120 countries and is recognized as a non-governmental organization (NGO) of the United Nations' Department of Public Information. Its mission is to ensure excellence in English language teaching to speakers of other languages. TESOL values professionalism in language education; individual language rights; accessible, high quality education; collaboration in a global community; interaction of research and reflective practice for educational improvement; and respect for diversity and multiculturalism.

'Daughters' exhibit is next for President's Gallery

Truman photography student Marta Chelminiak's favorite photos of Sarah, a friend's daughter, are the ones in which she's been able to catch the four-year-old off guard.

"You can tell by looking at the photos that she's in a good mood, a bad mood, upset. It's so realistic and so true," Ms. Chelminiak said. "I don't like posing pictures and I was never a good kid who could sit and be part of posed pictures."

Ms. Chelminiak's photos, and those of former Truman students Edyta Legiec and Bozena Budzynska, make up the exhibit, Daughters, which will be on display in the President's Gallery through early spring. A reception for the artists will be held at 5:30 p.m. December 9 in the President's Gallery, Suite 2230 on the second floor of the college, 1145 West Wilson Avenue.

All three women have spent a great deal of time with their subjects, which is apparent in the serenity and spontaneity of their work.

Stories of hope come to light in An Immigrant Class

Javad Kiani went to the Department of Motor Vehicles to get a driver's license. Everything was fine until the man behind the counter asked him if he wanted to be an organ donor. Mr. Kiani, who had emigrated to the United States only a month earlier, misunderstood. He did not play the organ and couldn't fathom what on earth that had to do with driving a car.

"Oh," said the DMV man, tongue in cheek. "Then I'm afraid I can't give you a driver's license."

"He was teasing me," Mr. Kiani said, laughing. "He said, 'You cannot do any playing? Nothing? Guitar? Anything?' I said, 'No.'"

Mr. Kiani's story is one of twenty collected in a book, An Immigrant Class, by Truman College adult educator Jeff Libman. Each profile in the book focuses on one of his former ESL students at Truman College. Teaching them, and eventually compiling their stories, he found he had a great breadth and depth of human experience.

Appraisers have a practiced eye for the things we own

Nothing, it seems, escapes appraisal, the art and science of attaching a value to something. Houses, commercial buildings, boats, airplanes, even cemeteries, are all fair game.

"I even met an appraiser who appraises alley vacations," said Sam Martin, who teaches appraisal techniques for the college's Continuing Education Department. "And I thought, 'My God, who'd want to go and visit alleys on vacation?'"

As it turns out, cities and towns, not travel agents, create alley vacations. Whenever a local government wants to "vacate" a city-owned alley and give it back to the neighborhood, they must first have it appraised. And that's where Mr. Martin's colleague comes in.

"This guy traveled all over Illinois, looking at alleys," he said.

Mr. Martin would rather teach, his next class offered at Truman being Appraisal Principles from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning October 26.

Truman graduate earns her Doctor of Pharmacy degree

Among the artwork and family portraits in Dr. Rabia Zizine's Albany Park home hangs an unusual centerpiece - her white lab coat. She put it there for her five children, to remind them that with hard work and sacrifice, they can achieve any goal.

"If that's the only thing I get out of this, inspiring my children, that's reward enough," Dr. Zizine said, smiling. "Now they have no excuse."

"This" is a Doctor of Pharmacy degree Dr. Zizine earned this spring from Midwestern University's Chicago College of Pharmacy in Downer's Grove. It was the culmination of a journey she began at Truman College in 1997.

Help for victims of Hurricane Ivan

Deon Lopez, president of the Truman College Student Government Association, is working to organize relief efforts for her birthplace, Jamaica, recently hit by Hurricane Ivan. The American Red Cross, 1.800.435.7669, is also providing relief for Jamaica, as well as hard-hit Grenada and other Caribbean islands affected by the slow-moving, category-five storm. Ivan devastated Grenada, killing more than 30 people and leaving about half of the island's 100,000 residents homeless. The storm also caused severe damage in Jamaica and in the Cayman Islands, where it caused heavy flooding and considerable property damage. It is projected to hit western Cuba Monday afternoon or evening.

Choose to make a difference

The third US president, Thomas Jefferson, drafter of the Declaration of Independence, used to say that "it is by their voices that the people exercise their sovereignty." But not everyone in this country feels obliged to exercise his or her sovereignty. In fact, only 60 percent of eligible voters - and only 68 percent of college students - cast their ballot in the last presidential election.

One in five said they were too busy.

In an effort to help get out the vote this fall, the Truman College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the community college honor society, is partnering with Project Vote Smart, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to voter education and providing unbiased information on political races. PTK members will place voter registration cards in the Registrar's Office, Room 1220, the Admissions and Advising Center, Room 1112, and the Academic and Cultural Club Center, Room 1145. Club members also plan to post information on the Electoral College and the history of voting in this country on the PTK bulletin board, also in Room 1145. PTK will also sponsor voter registration drives at each of a series of Honors Satellite Seminars the club is hosting beginning Sept. 28. Plans are also in the works for a forum on the electoral process.

Psychology honor society chapter wins national award

Members of Truman College's chapter of Psi Beta, a national honor society for community college psychology majors, received the national Psi Beta-Ann Robinson College Life Award, which recognizes programs that improve the quality of life at community colleges and advance the discipline of psychology. Truman won for a week-long series of workshops on coping with stress that was given at the college last year. Kenneth Gray, national president of Psi Beta and instructor of psychology at the College of DuPage, presented the award August 27 with City Colleges of Chicago Chancellor Dr. Wayne D. Watson and Truman College President Dr. Marguerite E. Boyd in attendance.

Psi Beta promotes professional development in the field of psychology by recognizing and promoting excellence in scholarship, leadership, research and community service. The organization is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies and an affiliate of the American Psychological Association and the American Psychological Society.

The Ann Garrett Robinson College Life Award, as it is formally called, is sponsored by a former national president of Psi Beta, Dr. Ann Robinson.

Prepare for the Illinois Basic Skills Test

Future teachers, before you embark on a satisfying career of molding young minds and collecting fresh apples, you must take the Illinois Basic Skills Test. In fact, you must take it before you transfer to a four-year college of education.

Two courses offered by Truman during the fall 2004 semester can help you review the skills and learn helpful test-taking strategies. Classes begin August 31 and run through November 4.

The first is English 127-Textual Analysis, designed to prepare you for the reading and writing portions of the Illinois Basic Skills Test. Plan to take the test itself in November. Prerequisites include a placement test, a grade of C or better in English 100 or consent of the department chairman. Classes meet from 5:10 to 7:10 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. The second course is Math 109-Concepts in Mathematics, which will prepare you for the mathematics portion of the Illinois Basic Skills Test. Again, plan to take the test in November. Prerequisites are a placement test or consent of the department chairman. Classes meet from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

How to land your next big movie role

If you're an actor or dream of being one, you know you won't be discovered overnight, even though you're stunning and talented. Normally, you show up at a casting office and discover yourself sitting amidst anywhere from five to fifty other people, all of whom sort of look like you. You're all there for the same part and you're all thinking the same thing: "How to I stand out from these other schnooks?"

This fall, the Truman College Continuing Education Department will offer an Auditioning Workshop to help you improve your chances for a theater or film role by making you more comfortable and confident when it comes to auditioning. You'll take part in simulated auditions and be coached on the preparation of monologues and scenes.

Class meets from 7 to 10 p.m. Mondays, Oct. 25 to Dec. 6. The instructor, Frederic Stone, has been on a few auditions himself, having been a professional actor and director for more than 25 years. He has landed roles in productions by most Chicago area theaters, appearing most recently in several productions by the Chicago Shakespeare Theater. He has also worked on Broadway and in regional theaters around the country. He has taught the Audition Workshop at the Organic Theatre, currently teaches the Performing Shakespeare Class at Victory Gardens and has conducted workshops at colleges and schools around the country.

Women Employed scholarship applications due August 1

August 1 is the deadline to apply for the Women Employed Upgrade Your Future Scholarships. The awards, sponsored by the Motorola Foundation, are open to female undergraduates pursuing careers in information technology-related fields. If you're at least 21, a woman and have a household income of $35,000 or less, you may qualify. You must be enrolled in or eligible for a program of study that leads to an industry-recognized credential -- a certificate or associate's or bachelor's degree.

Part-time to half-time students are eligible for up to $1,000 to use for tuition, books, supplies and/or living expenses. Women attending between half-time and full-time may receive up to $2,000, $3,000 for those attending full-time.

Great Books series course is open for fall

If you'd like to experience a little power and passion while working on three hours of college credit, sign up for Ideas in Prose, a special section of Literature 114 being offered this fall as part of the City Colleges of Chicago's Great Books series. Students at all seven CCC campuses will read the same set of books and correspond with each other on a variety of related topics. The theme, naturally, is Power and Passion.

Two of the books -- The Prince by Italian political philosopher Niccolo Machiavelli and Othello by William Shakespeare -- are about attitudes toward power during the Renaissance, roughly the 14th through the 16th centuries.

"Machiavelli's text, which introduced a new way of thinking about the world, helped to transform the world itself," said Kenneth Hope, who will teach Ideas in Prose this fall. "So, of course, has the work of William Shakespeare."

The other two books, Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart and Carlos Fuentes' The Death of Artemio Cruz, provide personal and political observations on the tense and often violent relationships between colonial and imperial power. This fall's Great Books also includes a film, Orson Welles' Citizen Kane, a celebrated examination of personal and political power in the United States.

Program puts seniors back on career path

Tom Hoveke's 40-year work life included successful stints as a teacher, medical researcher, actuary and database manager. Nancy Miller was a senior loan officer, insurance administrator and one-time assistant to the publisher of The New Republic magazine. When the economy cost both of them their jobs last year, they came to Truman College, but not to take classes. They came for an income, training and the possibility of a new career.

Both Mr. Hoveke, 62, and Ms. Miller, 59, are enrolled in the college's Senior AIDES Program. The program, run through the nonprofit Senior Service America and funded by the U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration, is designed to offer part-time work, training and job placement assistance to low-income seniors 55 and older.

"It has been heaven-sent," Mr. Hoveke said. "I'm closer to breaking even than to breaking into my home equity loan."

Dagoberto Gilb and Amalia L. Ortiz to appear at Truman

Fiction writer and essayist Dagoberto Gilb and performance poet Amalia L. Ortiz will perform in the "Def Grito Jam" from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, May 6, in the lobby of Truman College, 1145 West Wilson Ave., just west of the Wilson Red Line El stop. Admission is free.

Mr. Gilb is the author of Gritos, an essay collection that was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award for Criticism. He has written the short story collection Woodcuts of Women and a novel, The Last Known Residence of Mickey Acuña. His book The Magic of Blood won the PEN/Hemingway Award and was a PEN/Faulkner finalist. Mr. Gilb also received a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, a Whiting Writers' Award and a Guggenheim Fellowship. His work has appeared in numerous magazines, including The New Yorker, The Threepenny Review, Harper's, GQ, and Latina, as well as on NPR. He spent 16 years as a construction worker, twelve of those as a high-rise carpenter and member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters. He currently teaches creative writing at Texas State University in San Marcos.

Student watercolor exhibit opens Saturday, April 3

The art exhibit Conversations in Watercolor opens Saturday, April 3 in the main lobby of the college. The opening reception will begin at noon.

Conversations features paintings by students in the college's Continuing Education watercolor class. Their work includes portraits, landscapes and still lifes. The highlight of the exhibit is a series of "telephone" paintings done in the spirit of the children's game of the same name. One student creates a painting and gives it to another student who creates a painting inspired by the first. That painting is then given to yet another student who continues the process. Each artist only sees the painting he or she is using for inspiration.

Hot Rod is barreling toward Truman College

If you're a writer who likes cars or a mechanic who knows how to write, Hot Rod Magzine may be looking for you.

Publisher Ira Gabriel will give a presentation on automotive education, careers and the Hot Rod Magazine Power Tour at noon Thursday, March 25 in Room 104 of the Truman College Technical Center, 1200 West Sunnyside Avenue. The presentation will last an hour with Mr. Gabriel allowing a little time during and afterward for questions.

You'll have to ask about cars because unfortunately, he won't be able to bring any along.

Forum on racism will take place March 20

The Truman/DePaul Bridge Program will present "Racism: A Modern Weapon of Economic Exploitation and Political Oppression, the Untold Story of the European Legacy in the African World" from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 20 in the cafeteria at Truman College, 1145 West Wilson Avenue.

Keynote speaker for the forum will be longtime activist Prexy Nesbitt, who has worked for a number of organizations concerned with issues facing both the United States and the nations of Africa. Panelists will include Arnold Romeo of the Chicago Commission on Human Relations, Dr. Howard Lindsey of DePaul University and Dr. Martin Okoro of Collins High School. Truman College professor Anghesom Atsbaha will moderate.

The event is part of the City Colleges of Chicago's Project on Racism and will be recorded by WYCC-TV/Channel 20/21.

Yellow Elephant Sale will be March 18

The Truman College chapter of the American Association of Women in Community Colleges (AAWCC) will have their annual Yellow Elephant Bake Sale March 18. The event, featuring used clothing and knick-knacks, delicious baked goods, balloons and bunches of beautiful yellow daffodils, will take place from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in front of the cafeteria.

The AAWCC is a professional organization of women working in community colleges. Truman's chapter is the oldest in the City Colleges of Chicago. Proceeds from the Yellow Elephant sale will support scholarships for women students.

It is unclear why it's called a "Yellow Elephant" sale. It may have something to do with the daffodils or actual yellow elephants may be involved in some way. That's why the two gray elephants pictured above are waiting. They haven't seen a yellow elephant since 1976, when a skittish member of the herd named Fred ran from a couple of hyenas.

EMAIL WARNING

You've noticed the City Colleges of Chicago email system is down. Part of the problem are viruses carried by a spate of emails that have circumvented the filters through social engineering, that is disguising themselves as something friendly, familiar - something you're likely to open, thereby spreading the contagion.

You know the two major safety rules, but they bear repeating.

1) Never, ever open an attachment unless you know the sender, even if the email seems to come from someone in authority and threatens dire consequences if you don't play along. The only people at the District office you're likely to receive messages from and might not recognize immediately are network support analysts Chris Toledo (ctoledo@ccc.edu) and Ewa Lick (elick@ccc.edu) and the CCC Help Desk (cohelpdesk@ccc.edu).

2) The old saw is true in email. If it looks too good to be true, it is.

No pressure, but you're in the middle of Stress Week

Are you STRESSED? Of course you are. You're a student. But there's no need for all the jitters, headaches and sleeplessness. Members of Truman College's Psychology Club and the Psi Beta Honor Society for psychology majors have a relaxing idea.

It's called Stress Week and it's going on RIGHT NOW! Sorry. Shouldn't shout. Breathe. Breathe.

Despite the title, the object is not to cause stress, but show you ways to relieve it. Activities begin with a lecture on effective test-taking techniques at 1 p.m. Monday, March 1 in the Faculty Dining Room, which is in the very quiet southeast corner of the building, just off the cafeteria. On Tuesday, March 2 in the same peaceful venue, you can learn how best to manage your time, although you must first manage to put aside a chunk of it between 2 and 3:15 p.m. that day.

Health Fair is Wednesday, February 18

If you've been wondering about your blood pressure lately, free screenings for that and other ailments will be part of a health fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18 in the front lobby of Truman College, 1145 West Wilson Avenue.

Among the participants will be a host of state and county social service agencies, including Cook County Hospital, the Illinois Department of Human Services, the Chicago Department of Health, the American Heart Association, the Social Security Administration and the American Cancer Society.

If it smells or explodes, there's a reason

Charlie Abrams is beginning to frighten his colleagues.

It started innocently enough. He threw a birthday party for his students who were celebrating their billion second anniversaries. Then he sent around an email asking for pens bearing drug company logos. Not long after came the news that his VCR was broken and a request that someone record an episode of ER for him. All of this was strange, but OK.

Now, however, he wants peoples' gallstones.

Live ... From the Heart

In December, just before the holiday break, 70 students, teachers and chaperones from Whitney Young High School watched open heart surgery in the Satellite Center at Truman College. Luckily for the patient he was miles away, in an operating room at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

The remote surgery is part of an educational program of Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry called "Live … From the Heart." Students in grades 6 to 12 not only have a chance to watch open-heart surgery in real time, but to ask questions of the surgical team during the procedure as well.

Great Midwest Computer Show coming to Truman

Truman College will host the Great Midwest Computer Show from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, October 17 in the college gym. The show, the oldest and largest of its kind in the Midwest, will feature 100 exhibitors. Admission is $7, free for children 12 and under. You'll pay $1 less if you buy online.

Eighty percent of the merchandise, everything from motherboards to ink-jet refills, is new and most of it will be sold below retail.

Marguerite Boyd is interim president of Truman

Dr. Marguerite E. Boyd has been named interim president of Truman College following the Dec. 30 retirement of Dr. Phoebe K. Helm, who led the institution for the last seven years.

Dr. Boyd has 30 years experience in higher education, almost 20 of them spent in Illinois. She has been vice president of Truman College since 1997, during which time she has overseen much of the day-to-day workings of the institution.

Collecting antiques can make you famous

The show is an antiques/collectible series. Host Harry Rinker is an expert who appraises personal collections. He appraised seven items for the seven-minute segment, incluing those from Stephanie's vintage clothing collection, an unusual ladies' Tiffany pocket watch, a Sunbeam vertical toaster from 1923, a few old restaurant menus from an old diner, old toy cars and a few air raid-related items from World War II.

Stephanie doesn't know exactly what Rinker will choose to feature on the show, but she thinks he's leaning toward items from her dad's collection of vintage antique toy cars, trains and trucks, some of them in close to mint condition and dating back to the 1920s and '30s.

So tune in Friday at 7 p.m. for Stephanie's seven minutes of fame. According to Andy Warhol, she has another eight coming.

Nursing graduate is flying high

Edward McNamara, a Truman Nursing graduate, was on a flight from Los Angeles to Houston recently when the attendant asked if anyone on board was a medical professional. They were only 10 minutes into the trip.

At the back of the plane, Edward found a middle-aged man with all the symptoms of a heart attack. He was cold and clammy, his pulse was only 48 beats per minute and his blood pressure was very low, 88 over 44. Edward gave him oxygen and aspirin and monitored his pulse and blood pressure. Within 45 minutes, the man's pulse was up to 80 and his blood pressure had risen to 112 over 56. Nevertheless, Edward stayed by his side for the rest of the three-hour flight.

Pakistani poet and activist Ifti Nasim visits Truman College

Ifti Nasim, a Pakistani poet and civil rights activist now living in Chicago, recently visited Professor Rudra Dundzila's Islamic Humanities (Humanities 212) class at Truman College.

Mr. Nasim writes in English, Urdu and Punjabi. One of his books has been banned in Pakistan, where he received death threats from religious groups for his outspoken support of gay rights, both in his writing and in his political work. He has also earned numerous prizes and accolades, including an honorary doctorate in literature from the World Peace Academy in Delaware, induction into the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame and a nomination for a Nobel Prize in literature. Mr. Nasim serves on several humanitarian and social justice organizations and is president of both the South-Asian Performing Arts Council of Chicago and Sangat/Chicago, the Lesbian-Bisexual-Transgendered South Asian group.
